e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Triton vs. Orbit Microlader results......Pb Battery...

Several days ago I received my Orbit Microlader Charger. I paid twice the price of a Triton for it because the 3 Tritons that I tried did not work properly. Even Hobby Services/ Great Planes said that it was my battery and not their charger. It is not only me who thinks that they really don't know their product or how it is supposed to work!

Well now I have proof that the Tritons do not charge the lead acid batteries properly:

For the Triton:

I would discharge 5000 mA/Hr out of a Panasonic LC-R127R2P1 7.2A/Hr 12V Battery.

When I went to charge it at 2.8A after putting about 3200 mah back into the battery the Triton would start lowering the current to 2.7, 2.6 A and then just shut off with an "END" indication. Total energy put back into the battery was only just over half of what was taking out!

Now the Orbit Microlader V6.21 w/PC:

I discharged the same battery after a full charge using the Orbit to 5250 mah (not a full discharge):

Charged at 2.8A and the current stayed there for an 1hr 35 minutes before the voltage rose to 14.7V with current still at 2.8A (total charge at this time=XXXX)

Currently the charger is still going - at a current of 0.05A for just over 5 hrs 19 min with 5834 mAhr charged back into the battery! The constant voltage at 14.7Vdc is working perfectly. THIS charger is working like it should!

I will report back when the charge has stopped with the final values.

Also later on I will report on how well the Orbit Microlader does with my Li-Ion 7.2V, 1200mah battery!!!! Simply excellent again! Sorry Great Planes but I told you so!

Orbit has just released their V6.3 PROM update to make this charger even better! With it I believe you can charge the Lithium batteries at higher then 1C without any problems!

Send those Tritons back until they can fix them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael

Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered the 6.3 filmware to allow my Orbit Pro to charge up to 12 cell LiPoly's at 8 amps. Great update for 12 bucks shipped.

Thanks

rickc,
Is there also a firmware update for the non-Pro Microlader? Where did you get your update?

Thanks,
John

Yes, your prompted during ordering which version you have (pro or not). You can get your chip HERE.

YOU ARE PUTTING TOO MUCH CURRENT IN

After consulting several different sources, I've learned that you should NOT charge that type of battery at more than 1/4 C. For a 7A battery, that is approximately 1.7A.

My Triton charges wonderfully at the proper and safe 1/4C current setting, every single time.

If your new charger is allowing you to overcharge the battery at an unsafe level, you've made a terrible mistake.

Glenn,

Sorry but the specs are right on the front of the battery. It says that initial charge current should be kept at or below 2.88A.

Try discharging your lead acid battery to 11 volts or so and then charge it back up. See what comes out and compare it to what went back. Good Luck....you will need it! You will then discover one of many of Tritons flaws!

The Orbit Microlader is a super charger that
works excellent and is worth every penny.

Lithium Ion and Polymer batteries charge up great with the Orbit. And guess what? You can even get the current you select and more. This is all done with a safe algorithm that doesn't heat up the battery!
Try that with a Triton. My Li-Ion charges up fast also to where it should be.

It is probably hard for you to accept that the Triton doesn't work properly. Believe me I wish it worked right too because then I would still have one.

That may be true if you use a Triton!!!

Well when you start hating that one, just buy a Schultze. If I ever see the need to upgrade from the Trition, that's what I would buy.

I'm sure Great Planes is happy with your purchase too!

Without a factory authorized repair and warranty center in the US I just can't see purchacing a Schulze. The Orbit is an excellent choice for a high end charger and any repair if needed can be done in the states.

I haven't had any issues with my Orbit Pro, It's nice to punch my 2400's at 8 amps. I also own a Triton but it's not used near as much as the Pro. When it comes to my LiPoly's the Orbit seems to do an outstanding job.

I dwelled on the Orbit vs. Schulze decision for quite some time (years?) After reading lots of posts on ezonemag.com about both chargers I decided to go with the Schulze. I recently got the isl6-636+RS and I'm putting it through its paces.

The fact that they don't have an authorized repair center in the US doesn't faze me. I work in the IT field and find that 3rd party support is almost always lacking. If I have a problem I'd rather send it back to the manufacturer.
