Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Did my clutch fail?

I was flying my Raptor 30 and went to take off one last time and it seemed like the engine would rev up without the blades engaging. It was at the end of the day, so I did not test it a lot and took it home. I looked at the clutch and it seems all intact, There was a liner which looked to be about .05 inches thick (I could not get a caliper in there but I held a caliper next to it and eyeballed it). So if the famous Raptor clutch problem struck me, would it be obvious by looking at the clutch? For example, would the central part on the engine have exploded?

You can't miss a broken clutch

I bet the engine was running backwards. I've had it happen several times. No big deal, just kill it and start again. If your clutch was broken, you'd have pieces falling out when you remove the engine. When that happens you'll know.

If the engine was running backwards, the tail rotor would be turning in rather than the engine.

Thanks. I will leave it be until I fly it next, then make sure my starter motor polarity is correct. I did have a non-typical hard time starting it -- so something like that might have been wrong.

You can't start the engine backwards with the starter as the start bearing in the clutch will not engage. Engines start backwards when running rough, and just when starting, "kick back" and mysteriously start running in the opposite direction. If the clutch will seemingly not engage, this is a good indication that this has happened. Actually, the clutch is likely engaged but the auto hub is not catching to rotate the blades.

When I start mine, I keep the starter turning for a few seconds after the engine starts, until idling smoothly.

If it starts backwards, like he said, its because of a backfire (for lack of a better term). This is usually due to a mixture issue. Check your main and idle needle mixtures.

You can tell your engine is running backwards when you feel the tail rotor cutting a hole in your knee at idle!
