e-Electric Motors & Controllers > Phoenix 10 not responding

Hi there,

Today, I got the last part I needed to make my Hornet helicopter work finally in, the Phoenix 10. I connected it to the motor (Hacker B20-22s brushless) and the battery (via a connector). I now have a nasty problem with it:

Whenever I don't have the transmitter turned on, the red LED on the phoenix flickers irragularly. That seems normal to me. When I switch on the transmitter, the LED turns on and stays on constantly. I can't get the motor to run and I can't get the LED to turn off. I read that this probably means the phoenix is not 'armed' and ready to go because it did not see 4 secs of 0 signal. I have tried everything I could to correct the problem:
* set servo travel to -110%-110%
* reverse servo travel
* set servo type (MPX, JR, FUTABA)
* connect all to a different receiver.
* try different channels on the receiver and non-throttle channels on the transmitter and receiver
* disconnect the motor and try without it
* recharge the battery used

I tried these options in all possible combinations to get the LED to turn off. I also tried to start the phoenix while having the throttle set to maximum in an attempt to set it to programming mode. I get no beep and the LED stays on. All channels work when I connect servos to them (including throttle).
I use a Multiplex Royal Evo 9 transmitter and a GWS 6-channel naro receiver. Also tried a Multiplex micro 9 channel receiver,

I think the phoenix is broken, but I know I can't have done it. I really know what I am doing when it comes to electronics and I connected everything right the first time.

Please help. I have yet to fly my nice little hornet.

Thanks guys.

If you have the new Phoenix 10 Micro that was built before October 17, it has to go back to Castle Creations for a firmware update.

Steve at dreamhobbies told be he got his in at October 29th. He also told be about a first batch that had problems. So I assume this is not an issue.

Anything else I can test? Could it be the motor at all?

Thanks,
Jan

Like I wrote in the first post, I use a Multiplex Royal Evo 9 transmitter. Standard throttle channel is 5, but I can use FUTABA or JR assignments and tested those also.

Help!?

I don't know about the motor you or the ESC you have but in general you need to turn on your transmitter first, then turn on your receiver. You should here the beeps telling you it's armed. If you don't have an on/off switch you need to connect the battery after you have your transmitter and receiver turned on. It should then arm itself and you will be able to spool up.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Hi again guys,

That's just it. Is does NOT arm. And the transmitter is set to the lowest possible setting aswell as the highest.

It simply does not arm, whatever I do :-(.

Maybe your ESC is fried? Is it puffy or smell like burnt wires? Did your ESC ever get really hot? I'm not sure what it could be if it doesn't work? Try another ESC to see if the Phoenix is messed up.

Jan,
Just to restate something Saint728 is saying... Make sure you have the transmitter on BEFORE you power up the ESC. In your original post you stated that you are turning the ESC on first and then the transmitter.

Can you confirm with us that you have tried it the correct way (tx first)?

Thanks,
John

My original post was erroneous in that respect. I did in every test turn on the transmitter first and after that the controller.

I have contacted Castle Creations in the meantime and I must say the support is excellent. They are sending me a new one. Furthermore Steve at Dreamhobbies had also contacted CC and het got a response saying that a constantly burning red LED and no beeps indicate an erased controller that needs to be replaced. And so they do.

So now I'm waiting for my replacement controller. I thought I'd post this in case anyone can use the information.

Hi Guys,

Just to conclude the information for any1 else who could benefit from it:
The controller was the problem. When switching on, it makes a noise, twice in a row. I think the second time is to confirm the throttle has been detected as set to zero and meant as a confirmation the controller is 'armed'.

Bye,
