this is happening for the second time now.
An almost new battery (4.8V 1700mah nicd), charged maybe 5 times.
I use my triton to discharge at 1.0A and then charge with 0.2A, it shows charging nicd with 5.86V and does its thingy.
It stops charging at about 1500mah to 1550mah.

now I set it to charge at 0.1A (to top it off - why doesn't it do this automatically?)

at the time of this writing it shows charging nicd at 5.86V - 0.1A for 586min and is at 908mah

conclusion: 1500mah + 900mah = 2400mah

the battery is not warm at all and is still charging.

How can I find out how many mah there are in any given battery?

What is going on here.

the only way to know whats in a battery
is to pull out all the mA's and count them.

Seriously though, it sounds like the
delta peak voltage on your Triton setup
is a bit low and it's peaking too early
(giving you the 1500+). Or maybe the
discharge terminating voltage is a bit
high (should be 0.9v/cell) and it's
terminating the discharge too early,
thus leaving a little energy in the pack.

The 0.1A charge rate is almost trickle
charging and it's not suprising that
the Triton isn't able to detect the peak
so it just continues on it's merry way.

does this damage the battery or is it ok to leave the battery connected?
