Exactly how do you pin the torque tube, Does anyone have a sketch or anything like that. What material ? what type of pin ? where do you get them?

Thanks

I'd like to know also. But I think you can use a screw and nut but how is one suppose to drill thru the tube. I mean, do you need a drill press or something.

I just did mine last night.I replaced my shaft with an Easton Arrow shaft (Platinim Plus 2013) and used shaft ends from Rick's. If you are pinning the stock shaft, just drill and pin. Although I would recommend using the Easton as the stocks are seldom perfectly straight. Here's what I did:

    Aquire:

  • 10mm rollpins (2 of)
  • drive shaft (easton 2013)
  • shaft end (2 of JH 4 from Rick's)
  • Bearings( I used 2)
  • heatshrink

    Tools:

  • JB Weld
  • drill
  • hack saw/small angle-grinder
  • ruler/vernier caliper
  • tape
  • thin permanent marker

Steps:

  1. Measure the stock shaft end to end and cut the easton shaft to length, bearing in mind the shaft ends may not be the exact same length.
  2. Measure the distance from the end point for the shaft on the shaft ends to the pre-drilled hole.
  3. Mark a point on the shaft that distance from the end of the shaft.
  4. Do the same with the other end.
  5. Drill all the way through the shaft at that point
  6. Install the torque tube bearings onto the shaft.
  7. Mix a small amount of JB Weld and apply a very thin layer to the shaft end and a little bit in the inside of the shaft.
  8. Insert shaft ends into shaft
  9. Remove excess JB Weld that did not go into the shaft.
  10. Place a rollpin through the holes
  11. Apply a small bead of JB Weld onto the end of each pin end to secure it in place
  12. Let dry overnight.
  13. Install heatshrink over the rollpins.
  14. Install and fly with peace of mind!!!

I am so very sorry for the lousy pics. I absolutely hate my camera/webcam, will buy a new one when I've got all my heli bits bought! Maybe someone else can take a few snaps of theirs.

I believe the pins/holes are 2mm wide and I got them from a spare tail rotor shaft package. I chose 10mm rollpins so that I get a 1mm overlap on each side so that there is no chance that the pin can back out and only go through one shaft hole. Using rollpins is probably the best method, a nut and bolt could cause high frequency vibrations along the tail.

I also wrapped a 10cm length of cellotape around each side of the bearings so they do not move along the shaft. I don't have a drill-press and I managed with a tidgy 7.2V cordless. Just lightly tapped a small nail on the centre of the mark to get you started off. I have yet to heatshrink the pins for ultra reliability.

Sounds like alot, but it ain't and it is so easy and well worth it! Here's a case where my signature applies!
Hope it goes well!

In your step #8 I quote :

Insert shaft ends into shaft

I think that when you do that, most of the JB weld gets "pushed" all the way to the back of the shaft end into the shaft , due to the tight fitting between the two , that actually makes the shaft end work like a "squeegee", leaving very little JB weld in between the shaft end and the shaft itself.
I think a simple solution to add the amount of JB left in between the two parts is to "cut" ,with a dremel cut wheel, very small groves for the length of the shaft end, (2 or 3 will do), small enough not to weaken the part, but deep enough to allow the JB to have a better grip to both mating parts.
Maybe I am getting carried away bit too much , but we all really hate to loose that tail ....Don't we ?
Best of luck ..

Doom, your method is sound. I've been cutting grooves, with the corner of a file, since the inception of the arrow shaft mod. The grooves give the JB Weld some teeth. I don't bother with the pinning. Installed in this fashion, those ends don't come loose unless I ask them to.

For what it's worth, I hear TT is going to release the R90 with a drilled torque tube, must be something to it afterall....

I know I had one fail, wasn't pretty.

Rob Shaw, Alan is using a stock CF torque tube, not the aluminum.

Raptordriver, you are correct the new R90 comes with the hole for pinning, they know it needs to be done.

Yip Doom, I would of done that myself but my tool selection is very very limited, in fact I even had to borrow the drill. I'm sure the JB Weld that is in there plus the pins will suffice.

It did act a bit like a 'squeegee', but to account for the lost jb weld I made sure to also put some on the inside of the shaft and after inserting the end then removing the excess that was pushed out, I managed to put some JB weld through the pin holes and then rotate it around to get a bit more in. Your method would of been ideal.
