Safety - RC Helis are not toys > On-Off switch

I was at the park in Queens, NY yesterday when one of my friends started flying his X-Cell 60 and after about 5 or 8 minutes he lost complete control of the heli. The heli seemed like it was heading our way but suddenly smashed into the ground sideways. I ran to pull the fuel tubing going to the carb since it was going pretty fast without any load. The engine shut off and I picked up the heli, the Gem 2000 was not flashing at all, nothing was moving, it was dead. Upon inspection we found after taking the canopy off that the on-off switch was off; it appears that it's wear out and apparently the vibrations turned it off. The lesson here is if the switch doesn't feel tight - don't risk it!
I felt bad for my friend since this was the second crash he had yesterday (His Hirobo RG 30 had an encounter with the ground about 1 hour before this happened) and I know that Min-air parts are not cheap like Raptor parts which is what I fly but cheap or not we have to check our switches. Thank God nobody was hurt or anything.
Helichulo

PS: This switch was not mounted sideways like in the Raptors.

I mount my on-off switches upside down so ON is down. That way gravity helps keep it in the on position

I know, I know... it ain't much of an idea but it can't hurt right?

sorry for your buddies loss.... I'll be ordering some back-up switches next time I buy some heli stuff.

you can also use the "fail on" switches (such as those from www.fromeco.org, also available through www.arizonaheli.com), they won't turn themselves off.

If one helicopter was saved because of this post it was worth it! I don't know how many things I learned in RR but keep it coming guys. I think we should post any problem we encounter when we go out flying: big or small.

I like to use Futaba heavy duty, their a bit more up to the job, & carry higher currents, which is useful digi equiped heli's.

I had a switch harness that i used for quite a while without problem but i decided to replace it just for the hell of it, and me being the experimenter that i am i took the switch apart to find black wires. GASP me is happy i changed, don't know how long that would have lasted.

Switches

You might want to consider the Super Rocker Switch that is available from Electrotek. Call Bob and he well be glad to explain the advantages of this switch.

You will need a "special mounting bracket" to mount this switch.

Fromoca Switches

Great invention. I am running a couple of these and as I bring ships in for an off-season phase, I am switching out the whole fleet. Besides... they look really great in scale ships!.

Also, the shipping costs can be saved by getting them from Bill Ludwig at Arizona Heli.

power enable switch is the most important....

The Power Enable switch is THE most important link
on our heli's!

I saw a guy LAND a ccpm chopper with one bad of 3
head mix servo's when the one locked up. It wasn't pretty
but he actually got the bird down on her skids with no
damage.

A few years ago, an electronics co was selling out a 7 dollar
3 pole, double throw mini bat handle toggle for 35 cents each.
I bought the last 30 they had!

I got into rc and opened that old box! I use the 3 poles
soldered in parallel to operate my heli's. (8) I bought a servo
end cap crimp tool and make my own ends too. 20 awg wire!

However when I bought the new FURY, I did get electrotek's
Super Switch and Mounting Plate!

It's the best 30 dollars you can spend! And hey, everyone knows
these machines actually do not run on methanol, it's > > > Cash!

GET THE SUPER ROCKER.....Sleep in peace.

I weighed a Gem Super Rocker with the Heliproz aluminum mounitng bracket, against the heavy duty JR switch harness. The Gem switch was 40 grains (not grams) heavier than the JR. There are 450 grains in an ounce, so the Gem switch is 40/450 oz heavier, or less than 1/10 oz heavier. Not bad.
