what's the difference? cost, quality, safety ???

Next question?
I am looking for a low cost (not homemade PC) powersupply for my triton. I will be charging 4s4p lipos, so i probably need about 10-12 amps.

you actually mean switched vs. linear
and regulated vs. non-regulated.

Get a switched power supply that
is regulated. Lots of previous threads
about where to get them on the net.
Ham radio people use them (13.8v) and
that is fine for our use.

thats the most completely WRONG
description of power supplies I've ever
read.

I'd urge you to use the wonderful
Internet and a search engine to find
your missing clue.

Switched means the PS has a switch for on/off. Non switched are just always on.

ROFLMAO, that's a good one.

I think "switching mode" or just "switching" for short is more accurate and might reduce the apparent confusion.

Shaley,
Here is a great little switching power supply which may just meet your needs: http://ramboy.com/cosel.htm. And the price can't be beat.

Switch mode power supplies are more efficient, smaller, and stay cooler. Linear power supplies, on the other hand, are larger, heavier, less efficient, and get warm/hot for the same voltage and current capabilities as a switching supply.

This may be a bit more than your looking for explanation wise but it is does explain them: http://www.emersonnetworkpower-medi...r_vs_Linear.pdf.
