A friend of mine is trying to decide which radio to get, the futaba 8U or the JR8103.Both are good radios in my opinion, but he still needs to hear other opinions other than mine.I like both but he needs a little nudge in order to get of the pot and go buy one or the other.Any info would be greatly appreciated,Thanks.

I agree with Rudy, the 9C is the way to go if you want Futaba, not the 8U. The 8103 and the 9C are comparable radios and will do the job equally well. It tends to be a Ford vs. Chevy argument. You can't go wrong with either.

Being that they are both the same caliber, and both are easy to program (I still say the 8103 is easier than the 9c, but I do not know the 9c as well) I would recommended that he goes to the local hobby shop and handle both radios. (Or find a couple buddies that have them) Have him see which one fits his hands better. Have him hit the switches without looking. At this time I think he would be able to make up his mind.

8103

The 8103 digital trim pcm is the best JR radio for the money. You can
go from the basic 30 size trainer to a 60 size 3d heli. Easy to program,
and with the pcm if you go to gassers it's the right radio. I have been flying JR for years and they have'nt let me down, and will stand behind
their product.

w/ the 9C, Futaba has at *least* caught up if not surpassed the 8103

Radio???

I have owned both the 8103 and the 8U. They were both about the same for ease of programming, but I preferred the Futaba Servos to the JR (had too many failures with the 5 series JR servos). And the software of the 8U was more powerful (e.g better t/r pitch curve options). So IMHO, even if the 9C were not available today, I would get the Futaba 8U. The choice of the 9C is an obvious one over the 8103 as its software is even more powerful then either of the other two. Just having switch asignability makes it vastly superior. The 9001 servos are ions ahead of the JR. Unfortunately the 9C is less money (for the less aware, this is meant as an ironic statement) so it can't be as good

Comparing the 9C to the 8103 is like comparing a 466 Pentium 3 with Windows 95 (8103) with a 1.6 Pentium 4 with window XP, but you pay more for the 466P3/W95.

the switch singability is a joke, why change where they are? just confuse yourself in the air if there different places on different models, the 8103 is a killer radio, And I find it easy to use also, and JR's just look like better quality, them 8 channel futaba's look so cheap! just my opinion. Personally, I think JR screwed up on the 10x line having one for airplanes and one for heli,

There is really no need to compare the 9C to the 8103, they are both excellent radios. my personal preference is JR 8103 with Futaba servos, although there really isn't much wrong with the current JR servos so long as they are ball bearing servos which are better for Heli use( or high vibration applications)

Jetman, I don't think you really understand what switch assignability is all about. It isn't just the ability to assign switchs to different locationst, (which I do on my 9Z for personal comfort reasons while still flying friends helis with the switchs in the stock locations with no problems what so ever) it's the ability to assign several functions to the same switch it you wish and to assign functions like gyro switching to exactly the switch you want, not just the switchs the manufacturer decides you should use. Having that kind of versitility may be the reason that the top seven places in the world patten championship (still the most competitive form of RC flying in existance) decides to use Futaba. To say that a radio is better because it has less features can be carried to its extremes, why not just go back to using a standard four channel radio and mechanical mixing.
