Last weekend I got to do an unexpected auto with a friends Raptor 50, and luckily I was able to get the heli down with very little damage. That being said I think its time to take another step and learn to do good autos... My question is that since my helicopter has a driven tail, and a GY401 gyro (which is always ran in HH mode), what should I expect the tail to do when throttle hold is act or deactivated. Is the Gyro going to react quick enough to the torque produced by the engine when the engine spools back up on botched attempt? I guess I could take the heli up high and experiment with it but I am just curious what I should look out for. Lords knows I don't need another crash this season

Thanks!!

take it up about a foot off the ground hit hold and see what happens the tail might swing a bit before the gyro catches up..i do mean a small bit!
most radios have a feature that counteracts this in jr radios i believe it's called offset but usually the tail wont go too far

If your heli has a driven tail and the gyro is in heading hold you shouldn't have any problem when you hit TH.

I do autos with my Vigor CS (it has a driven tail) in heading hold and there is no fuss. I prefer doing 180 autos in HH cause then the gyro looks after the constant rate of turn, I just put in the amount of rudder I need and it makes sure the heli turns at that rate no matter what. That's not true for rate mode where you must compensate for the wind and such.

Kirk, the T/R will not care that the engine went to idle, it will see the change in torque just like it sees any other change in M/R torque in any other movement of the throttle and respond accordingly, Have fun with the autos and remember : for the purposes of learning autos, limit your pitch to -4 or -5 on the bottom...anything more and the rate of desent will resemble a 3 hole brick and be much harder to break the desent with positive pitch! -4 to +12 will give a good auto with a smooth gentle desent rate... also, a 10 MPH headwind is nice. Have fun and make sure you tighten you M/R blades in the holders, it'll keep you from boom striking if ya' bounce! Chris Carlson

It makes sense now

Thank you everyone for the replys, I think I have a much clearer picture now on what will happen. Unfortuanlly this weekend I wasn't brave enough to try an auto with my Fury, but I did suscessfully auto down my friends raptor when its engine flamed out from about 60 feet up. It felt kind of satisfying getting it down on one piece, but it also scared the crap out of me. The Qwest to learn autos continues
