With all the modern technology, it's really amazing this is where powered flight started:

This is the first fully authentic 1903 Flyer built since the original machine. It has completed a full suite of wind tunnel tests and will be flown on December 17, 2003, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Documentary

I just saw a documentary on this recently on either the History Channel or Discovery. Don't remember which, surprising to see what a difficult task the first one really was. It has taken the engineers / volunteers a number of years to recreate the thing, and they weren't sure it would fly.

Pretty amazing considering Orville and Wilbur didn't have Wind Tunnels and Computers to test...

The Wright brothers most certainly had a wind tunnel. They built it to systematically test airfoil sections without having to build a whole bunch of gliders.
