I have a whole fleet of Kalt cyclones 1 and 2 anyone know where I can get some parts for these things, I really (I mean really) need their funky 60 tailboom....friggen 20-22mm tapered boom, who the heck thought of that? any info would be greatly appreciated (I will consider trades, I have one great (read New 1 flight) kalt cyclone and three other helis I call parts birds all they are lacking is tailbooms....HINT HINT)

I had a Kalt Cyclone when I was in high school. Carried that pile of crap around in my car, but I was always afraid someone would smash out the window and put 2 more Cyclones in! I have no fond memories of this pig. Unfortunately I pitched it out when I was cleaning up my parent's basement 2 months before I learned about eBay and that there were sentimental jerks like me who still liked to mess around with these old machines and could have gotten some use out of it.

That boom was a unique piece of fiberglass art and I've never come across a piece of material like it, even though I build my own booms now. It might be possible to expand a piece of aluminum tube on a lathe, or use a tube that fits the smaller end and machine a sleeve to undersize the larger end.

If you keep the Cyclones 'cause they are neat old birds that remind us all of how good we have it today, more power to you. On the other hand, if your "generous" uncle gave it to you or your wife found it a yard sale and you want to learn how to fly on it, I'd recommend putting it aside and learning on a modern machine. The slipping tail belt alone will challenge even the best pilot!

Have fun!

cyclone

Well I aquired it in a trade for some other r/c car stuff I didnt need and have been flying rappy's and kyosho's for quite some time, I take the kalt out and buzz it around just cause I think its a neat old beast....just the reasoning behind some of the engineering behind it puzzles me sometimes (IE Tailboom) I am actually going to try something tonight to try and build my own tailboom out of a donor rappy boom, I found a pipe expander that I am going to try to expand one end to fit the desired diameter, but what do you think of this Idea... what would happen If I just hooked up a whole rappy tail gearbox tailboom, belt ect. up....hmmm tell me what you think....may be easier than doing what I was going to do...I'll keep you posted. I also found that raptor 60 clutch bells work wonderfully if you take off a bit of the very top where the pinion gear mounts then you can install a one peice clutch and eliminate the crappy friggen kalt setup...more to follow

Those Kalt clutches were fun when a spring pin let loose! A tube expander will likely work (try it on the good end of scrap boom; some aluminum will tear rather than stretch), as will bolting a Raptor tail case if it is a good fit. The Cyclone had a plain drive belt that was prone to slip. This was corrected with a toothed belt on the Cyclone II. If the belt teeth are close to the same pitch, and the pulley is roughly the same diameter, the case should probably work.

Kalt

got a chuckle out of me on that one.... well the tubing expander works Exceptionally well, with one caviot, (I took the advice of a kind heliguy and practiced on a bent up boom first) If you do it cold it will split, I cut that section off and tried again this time heating the end up very gently with a propane torch, just where it gets that dull scabby look before it gets red and melts in a flash. and then crank on the expander and your in bizeness. that being said its hard to do that and get 22mm the first time...so a little tweeking with it cold and it streched out enough to work. next up seeing if the rappy equip will work, that may make my life easier heck I may say heck with it put it in the classifieds and get out of the old heli biz....heck I couldopen up a machine shop and had two new heli's built in the amount of time it took me to make one boom and a clutch system...errrr Any Kalt freaks out there looking for a serious amount of parts????really, I'm serious....

Gidday

I made up a good tail boom by using straight tube that was 20 mm

fited the tail box and on the other end I wrapped it in 2 places with rubber amalgimating tape , worked very well.

Did you guys struggle with the slop in the collective change bobbin assy in the mainframes ? I had a stock of clutch wire, I can really relate to Stephen's high school story !!

Regards Don
