Got Jet Fuel? Turbine Helicopters > Starter Motor Problem

I was running my turbine at the Sulphur fun fly and had a problem. When I shut the turbine down, it sounded like a bearing in the starter motor siezed and smoked came from the starter motor, or at least it looked like it came from there. I pulled the power from the starter motor, and the smoke slowly ceased. The max turbine temp was around 510. I only idled it and spooled it up for a very short time.

Any suggestions? I have the starting motor off the heli now.

Since the turbine was not allowed to finish the cool down cycle, is there probably turbine damage?

The turbine has less than 4 hours of running time.

Jetcat are very good at customer service.

They will know the answers to your questions, as opposed to the guesses you might get from all and sundry here.

I was going to hazard a few guesses myself, but that's what they'd be. I have one of the really early ones and the start has been completely reliable, but I have heard of the occasional problem.

Call them.

My starter motor used to sound very rough, like the bearings were square. On shut down, the motor was not allowed to pulse on & off as it was always engaged. Problem was found to be the dog drive on the starter shaft was bone dry. Since I lubricated it, as per JetCat UK instructions, it's been perfect ever since.

i would not worry about the turbine too much ... if you did not overtemp it, the bearings should be fine , abd besides the bearings, i think everything eles in there is pretty buletproof .... no moving parts , etc .. it might be possible that the starter motor was not diengaging from the turbine shaft ...

i once had a HP5 not finish its cooldown sequence, because the battery had died on me ... there was some smoke out of both ends of the turbine and some crackling sounds .... no problems ther .. if anything, i might have shortened the life of the bearings by a few hours at most ...

Thanks All

Thanks for the reply. Yea, I heard the crackling sounds. I have removed the starter motor and the dog drive is sticking. I will lube it and try it again.

This just got my attention!

locked bendix unit

I have on a few occations seen the bendix unit on the starter lock in the forward position, all it took was some wd40 or like oil to free it up. this happened twice after leaving my jetcopter in the garage for a few days during a rain storm.

Thank

Thanks for the info. I am not used to smelling burning electronics on a turbine. The bendix was definately stuck. Ill lube it today and try again.

on the HP5 there are no electronics in the turbine to worry about . .. the colsest electronic components are in the black box on the side (glo driver, starter, rpm sensor. and temp sensor) .... on jet turbines like the P80 - p200 the electronics which are in the box on the HP5, would be under the purple cover ... still very safe however .....

Starter Motor

I pulled the starter motor from my other Jet Cat and the turbine started right up and ran well. I have ordered a new one from Jet Cat. The price is 176.95 in case anyone is interested.
