I have constant drive auto hubs from Rick's on my 30 and 50 and they work great. Don't know about the slipper.

Bob,

I agree the conversions from Ricks are great.

DNHP Flier,

I'm holding it in my hand, just came in today. I needed a few things and added it to my order. As my R50 won't be here till tuesday and my R30 is to be delivered to a new owner tomorrow I can't tell you how good (or even how) it works. Supposedly it is great. And, unlike a constant drive unit, if you hit the ground with the tail it will slip to help prevent damage to belts, etc. Very easy to install and adjust too, I like that. Not a big fiasco if I need a new gear/ auto hub/etc. It takes the slop out of the setup, according to the webpage.

FYI: My R30 had enough tension in the system that it would keep the tail driven somewhat for the length of time it took to do a full auto, no problems controlling a straight decent bone stock. If you killed the engine on the decent it would stop the tail blades and slightly yaw when you flair. If this unit makes my unpowered auto's like my powered ones, that's all I need or want. I'll get back to you in a week and let you guys know how good it works. Need time to set up a new heli and also break in the engine. Better give me 2 weeks.

constant drive/ slipper clutch

Is the slipper clutch worth it?

A friend of mine said he had a similar device on his ergo and it sucked because it was inconsistent, ie: drove the tail sometimes, and somtimes slipped..... but of course that was the ergo.........

The other thing i was wondering was if the constant drive/slipper clutch kills some of your auto time, cause it has to drive the tail.

Thanks

I just installed one on my Raptor 46. I flew it Friday and it works fine. It does just what it is supposed to . It keeps the tail spinning for limited authority in autoroatations. Well worth the $19.

Constant drive vs Slipper

In my experience with constant driven tails and slipper clutches, the constant wins out.

With a constant drive, there is NO drag from the engine on your "rotor train" when in an auto, ie the engine is completely disconnected from the mainshaft and tail whereas with a slipper, you are engaged to the powertrain just as much as you are to the tail which means the engine will be dragging on your blade momentum. In a deadstick auto once the engine stops and the clutch disengages then it is relatively free.

The downside to both is if you have a tail servo, gyro, or tail hub failure, you are looking at one rough ride to the ground. You will have that problem all the way in whereas with a slipper, there is minimal disconnect and you may or may not be able to disengage the tail on the way down, likely not. This actually affects both systems.

Constant Drive hub

I have the original prototype hub that Ron's were fashioned after and absolutely love it. It is now in my 50. I also turned one out of nylon (plastic) that is holding up well in a 30, I'm not sure if it could survive the torque of the 50 though.

Those that know me and have seen me fly, know that I like doing aerobatic autos (inverted pirouetting, rolling, flipping, etc). I could not live without a driven tail .
On the down side, I once tossed a tailblade and that caused some real havok. As the blde departed it knocked mu CF pushrod off the tail linkage which went up into the main blades and as the mains hit it, it kinked the boom to the point of pinching the belt. The helicopter let out a horrible screetch and the mainblades stopped at about 150' up. I watched in horror as the ship just fell onto it's left side. Very little damage though, didn't even hurt the main blades. Broke the Century muffler off though.
Without the constant drive hub, I would have been easily able to auto to a safe landing and saved myself a $35 muffler.
