Very nice John. I'm impressed. I suppose you are using a downlink system correct?

Not likely anyone will get results like that off a forward mounted camera JO.

Ive spent the time and the gone yards finding out what does and does not work, more importantly why one system works and others do not.

Not just to satisfy my own curiosty but its what I do with any sophisticated equipment I own and operate.
In short, if it breaks I wont know how to fix it unless I know the entire theory of its operation.

Front mount rigs might look sexed up but for all the benefits stated by some the downside is severe and the design of them ignored some fairly simplistic technical facts.
Facts that are simplistic to me now but where not for a long time.

Anyone is welcome to spend the time and money and prove it to themselves and they will in the end (if they get it right) see that the system you use exceeds front mount systems for camera work.
Stills and Video.
Not by myth but inarguable scientific fact

No guessing needed to figure out where my camera sits on my heli these days. Not up front thats for sure.

While I may be a disagreeable person and have plenty of Aussie scepticism, first and foremost are the technical facts above all other issues to me and nothing else really matters.

And on the facts of what system works and what is better Ive made my conclusions after a good year of research and testing and Ill put my bet on your Airfoil rig.

Sky you may find its important to have both to make it worth it.
That is, get the good shot AND have the right gear to capture it properly.

After reviewing the credits last night I found that WhirlyBird was the helicam operators of the shows last night. To tell ya the truth it seemed like an amateurish shoot. The cam was just a little shakey. Not all that bad tho. From what Ive seen Airfoil seems to be a little smoother.

Sky
May be the case for hiding in the chearleaders changing rooms, regardless of the picture quality you could still say the video looks good.

But for merchantable quality Helicam video the pin hole cam aint worth the rubber band for fitting to the heli.

John was referring to the 120X digital zoom. I have a TRV-19 with 10x optical and 120x digital zoom, but haven't had the balls to fly it yet. I'm starting out small by just shooting stills.

Hey Sky Photo....

What these guys are trying to say is this.......

You will NEVER, and I repeat NEVER get a better picture with a pinhole camera than you will get directly with a good video camera in the air.

I understand your point as well. If you like it, the bottom line for you is that it is just fine. There's nothing wrong with that. It is your opinion, and you are certainly entitled to it.

I'm not trying to get into a pissing match with you. I just want you to know that these guys are talking about running a professional business with clients who expect a lot.

If you satisfy clients with your setup, then my hat's off to you. Great job!

Just don't try to argue about equipment issues with these guys. They have a totally different perspective than you.

By the way, I'm not just spouting-off here. I am a producer at an NBC affiliate who also has a freelance Video business on the side. I am looking into getting an aerial business started, but I haven't yet.

I will not comment on aerial issues, but I most certainly AM qualified to talk about picture quality.

Just my 2 cents. Peace to everyone!

John,

Do you see any HD demand yet locally?
720P on your mount would be stunning!

Every time I see the HD NFL Skycam display on 106" my mind wanders towards the video world ;-)

Side note: what viscosity oil is in the shock on the 30 mount?
(it's getting to be winter and it might be time for an "oil change")

Cheers,
Jeff
