I have and fly both.

Like the easy engine drop on Raptor.

Like clutch and engine start shaft design on Hawk better.

Like head design better on Hawk.
Related to head I think:
Still working on fine tuning, but so far Hawk stays in the groove better during FFF.

Raptor autos a little better, but does not penetrate into wind as well as Hawk coming down. Higher drag Raptor canopy I think.

Just looks:
I like the new Hawk canopys over Raptor.
Like looks of other mechanics of Raptor over Hawk.

Boy, am I in big trouble, I should have kept my fat mouth shut !, LOL,,, first let me say that although I was a newbie with over 70 hours on the simulators, I was very surprised that I could hover my Raptor for the first time I flew, I kept it within a 6 Ft circle, the Raptor does fly very good !, it also blew apart on it's third flight !,,, and Ace is going to replace it, that's real good/nice of Ace !!
What I like about the Raptor over the Hawk4 SE2, the Raptor seems to have less parts, the Raptor's frame has 3 major parts, a left side a right side and a servo tray, the Hawk has 2 more lower sides, I like that the Raptor's frame contours more around the internal parts more,,, I like the Raptor's Collective Pitch Control Arm more and the way the Aileron servo mounts on it,,, not counting the tail drive the Raptor has 2 less main-drive gears than the Hawk, the Century helis are the only helis I know of that have a 4 gear main-gear system...

What I like about the Hawk4 SE2, FOR ONLY $70 more you get a set of $80 carbon covered main blades, a really nice all metal swash plate, more BBs, all screw-in linkage balls, and a very good manual,,, the Hawk's parts look like there was more time spent on the castings, the part are made from a better/stronger materiel, Hawk's rotor head is more uniformed,,, I like that the Hawk's start-shaft disengages after the motor is started,,, I like the shaft driven tail, the hawk is an all around tighter machine and I like the Hawk was designed and developed in the good ol USA...
If you are going to buy a $250 Raptor kit and the $29 bearing upgrade that's $279, but you can have those $80 main blades and the $50 all metal swash plate that come with the Hawk 4 SE2 kit for ONLY $50 more!!,,, BUT, the Hawk IS a more complicated heli but it also seems to be a higher quality machine, some say the Raptor flies better other people say the Hawk rolls and tumbles better/tighter, I'll find out,,, someday,,, when I'm good enough !!
OOOoh, and I would tell a fellow newbie not to use those $80 main blades untill they were ready for them, put them away and get some Heli Max wood blades to learn on !!

SPEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have one equipped with an OS46 fueled by 30%CP. It's a very fast and agile helicopter right side up or upside down using the wood blades. Just placed an order for glass blades and looking forward for a much smoother flight and autos!
Have fun, you will enjoy it!

That seems like a lot of motor for a Hawk,,, it must be real quick too ??!!

Hi
Right on! Wasp one thing I did do to my Hawk was to locktite the countershaft bearings to the shaft. The Hawk SE flies great, what gyro
are you using? So far after about 250 flights the engine hasn't been out of my Hawk.. unlike the Raptor I used to own, it was a good thing the motor (36tt ) dropped out of the Raptor

You'll like it more after you fly it.
Mine is great, I fly the Hawk SE more than my Raptor now. My Raptor's been sitting in my garage doing nothing.
The head is much better that the Raptor's.

Hawk/Raptor

Hi Wasp,

Glad to hear you like the Hawk better. That also seems to be the consensus around here.

Just a few comments. You will find that your 4 piece mainframe system on the Hawk (compared to the 2 piece unit on the Raptor ) is an advantage.
1) it makes the system modular, so that only a few bolts will seperate the complete top section from the power section, leaving the power section open if ever you have to service the fuel tank or the engine/carb (the whole engine will not have to be dropped out.
2) On the SE, your lower frames are of 2mm aluminum so they are stiffer, are harder to break in a crash (the front extension "legs" on the Raptor break fairly easily) and if they are damaged in a crash enough to need replacement, the complete frame does not have to be disassembled
3) aluminum as a frame for the engine area will always act as an additional heat sink that helps keep the engine running smoothly.
4) this lower frame also place the fuel tank under the mainshaft so that the Cof G will not change much as it burns off.
Though this type of modular frames are more expensive to produce they are advantageous.

The extra parts count (gears and bearings) resulting from the dual power system gives a smoother, less critical system and a system whereby the power loads are shared by more teeth so the gear wear factor is much less. Again, more expensive to produce, but very advantageous

And as you have experienced, though it may have a bit higher parts count, the superb manual probably made it easier to assemble.

Happy flying

hawk iv

I'm currently flying the ccpm Raven 30. This bird handles great. I want another heli for a back-up. Summer is approaching, don't want to be caught grounded for any reason. Therefore, I am currently building a Hawk IV, I have heard some great things about this heli. Good price, parts easy to get and flies great!

Hawk / Raptor

Raffy,

Are you using the standard 550mm blades on your 46 conversion?

Not a Hawk SE

I would like to apologize for an error of my Century model helicopter.
It is not a Hawk SE but a Falcon 46.
The Falcon 46 is mainly plastic bushings than bearings, but even though, this model heli can fly every which way you want to.
I have no desire to upgrade as I use it to practice maneuvers and performs just as well! I throw all my upgrades on my Xcell SE heli.
I have had this heli for a year and it is still cooking!
This model uses a 600mm

I've had my hawk 4 for 3 months. Got it as backup for my r30.
Doesn't have thrust bearing in head like r30 but still flys great.
Landing gear crap but the hawk is way cheaper and lighter than r30.
tt36 and cp30% make it go good.

Falcon 46

Raffy,

Ah, that means you have the old original version of the F46. If you liked it you will find the new Falcon SE V2 a real top gun. Comes with 600mm FRP blades, bearings on everything, full metal swashplate, C/F trque tube drive, triple bearing tail rotor blade grips, new lower frames to accomodate the OS50's needle valve location, slipper clutch etc.etc. I didn't think one could get everything for just $400.00.
Check out the spreadsheet comparing it to other 50 class machines at;

Falcon 46

I do not intend to modify or buy the new and better brand. I strictly use theF 46 heli for practicing maneauvers. My funds are directed on my 60 helis particularly the Xcells ! The bigger machines fly smoother!
