If anyone here remembers my post about the sheared 'Jesus' bolt on my R60 I'd like to let you know that ACE came through and replaced the parts that were damaged. The R60 is back flying and just as good as ever.

Although it was a pain sometimes to get in touch with them they made good on everything.

Thanks ACE!

I sometimes wonder if companies purposely ignore emails, but then again I start to remember that they're dealing with the entire planet, where we're dealing with one company. I do not envy them at all!!!

I'm really glad they made good to ya though. If you ask me, any company that actually does get back to you, let alone replace parts for you free of charge, is simply great! Like I said, we're dealing with one company.. They deal with the world.

Broken head bolt

Today after a good days flying with my R60 I had to again remove the auto unit as it had seezed, which is now on it way back to the suppliers to be replaced, then I set about cleaning and I was checking over the bolts on the helicopter and noticed that the 4mm bolt which holds the head to the main shaft was broken (sheared at about 5mm from the bolt head). Lucky for me this was notice before another days flying tomorrow other wize it could have been a very expensive accident.

Just goes to show what thoughs pre and post flight checks can reveil.

i had this happen on my Raptor-30. Luckily, i caught it on the ground prior to flight. What would be the best material for the bolt to minimize this problem and are the manufacturers delivering the correct style/material?

Email! Ha! I would never consider emailing a company unless I had no desire for a fast response. You must call. I say this based on almost never having success with email and companies.

Just a Note, I replace all the bolts that go through the main shaft with sholdered bolts. What I mean by shouldered, is the theads are not cut all the way to the head of the bolt. What your after is a shouldered bolt were shoulder is just short of coming through to the opposite side. You may have to cut some threads off once you find the right bolts

What this does is give you full strength, the area of the threads is weaker than the solid shoulder. I also use the same method on my blade grips.

And,

Your description of the bolt sounds exactly like mine was. Check out my gallery for pics and you'll see what I mean.

Jeff,

Greg, and the rest of the people at Ace are great. When I first purchased my Raptor 30 I had a few problems. I contacted them and Greg called me right back and made arrangements for the necessary replacements parts.

They are a good company and handle great products. Remember they are currently going through a rather large move(s) and we need to have a little patience until they get settled down at their new home. Then we will be able to get the usual great service they tipically provide.

Glad to here they came through for you and that your having fun flying your new machine.

The bolt in you picture is a full thread bolt. Send me your E-mail address and I'll send you a picture of what I'm talking about.

Shanked Bolts

You guys are not using shanked bolts in high shear applications like holding on your rotorhead? Come on now, that’s just plain dangerous!

Sheesh!

You know what Dave, maybe I was ignorant or just plain trusting that TT KNEW what they were doing. When I was building my Raptor I thought about that particular bolt not being a shouldered bolt. But I rationalized that TT knew something about what they were doing. I was wrong and fortunately no one got hurt because of it. Is it my fault the bolt broke? Maybe, maybe not. The thing is the manufacturer should have known from the beginning of the correct bolt to put in there.

Think about all the people out there that have R60's they bought as ARF's with that bolt already installed. Or about the thousands of others that might not be as smart or intuitive as you are. Do they deserve you discord or disdain because they use the hardware supplied by the manufacturer? A manufacturer they trust to do the right thing?

I'm trying to do a favor to everyone and let them know what happened to me. It's funny no one else has ever mentioned this issue with the bolt that I am aware of. To me it's a much more grievous error to know there is a problem, be aware of the fix and then NOT tell anyone. That IMO is reprehensible.

I agree

Yep, you are doing the right thing....I guess those who don't know need to know. It is funny that ACE even sells them that way, perhaps if they have to replace enough crashed machines due to the bolt shearing they will change how the kit comes. It is however nice to know that they stand behind thier product.

My kit was equipped with the proper shouldered bolt!

I would love to show it to you, but I don't have a picture of it yet.

I did need to have my swash replaced and Doug Henke at Ace was of great help. And no I didn't need to call them, I just used e-mail
