Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Put on landing gear frontwards or backwards?

A lot of people put on their landing gear backwards to help with stability. It looks a little odd though -- so why not just slide the struts back to accomplish the same thing?

Does it really make a difference??? What does it change to the heli.. other than looks? Is it because it shifts the CG back a little?? It just wouldn't seem like enough of a change to matter. I'm really curious.. I bought a used rappy 30, and the gear was on backwards. I turned it around the right way.

It moves the CG forward of the gear so that it won't tip back on landing. As far as look -- well, it looks worse -- so I would never do it for looks.

I don't understand how people think that helicopter designers would not realize that. They think designers are dumb so they decide to go ahead put on the landing gear backwards.

Designers are not dumb. The reason for the landing gear to be the way it is is so that when you land in a hurry or a bit too fast it won't push the tail up against the blades and cause a tailboom strike.

I put them on backwards at first but didn't like the looks, and one flip and the canopy would pop off the front gear. It really didn't help that much with keeping the tail out of the dirt anyway.

I don't know about the rest of you but in all my years flying helis I have never had a problem with landing and keeping the tail out of the dirt/pavement. Maybe it's me but if you need to switch your gear around I think you need to review your piloting skills. (just my opinion so don't flame me )

I've never had a problem landing the heli level and on the skids. I would think if the designer wanted the skids backwards they would have designed it that way. I guess you could say it looks cool but I just don't get it. In fact most real helis that have skids you could pull down on the tail boom and lever them off the front end of the skids. You have to do this to many of them to put on the ground handling wheels. Anyone that's worked on JetRangers or Hueys knows this.

my .02 cents....

I agree with jbrundt and SENECA learn how to land or use the Tuff Struts. The Tuff Struts are nicer looking and stronger. This will have to be your choice!
Nice raptor SENECA!

most full size helis have tail skids

If you notice most full size helis have some sort of tail skid at the bottom of the vertical fin. The designers put it there for preventing tail blade strikes in an auto or too much aft cyclic landing condition. Don't want to strip them gearboxes

I should have been a little more clear in My previous post. I fly off a grass field, so when building my R30 I had read that putting the gear on backwards would help keep the tail up a little higher and out of the grass. I have no problem keeping the tail out of the grass when landing, it's when the rotor speed decay's and you lose cyclic control on spool down then it get's in the grass. But like I said before it did not help much and the front latch on the canopy was very loose fitting so I put them on the proper way.

I do something a little different. I put the front ones on pointing towards the front and the back ones facing the back for a longer base and more stability. Looks fine too.

Seneca,
Why don't you just tell it like it is? Why sugar coat it? I know you really do like your Raptor, you just don't want to eat crow after all you have said about them, isn't that right? And, don't think for one moment I am trying to egg you on!!!! Well, maybe a little bit...........
