e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Triton & LiPo - Confused???

I was about to buy a Triton tomorrow, but it sounds like it may be a mistake from what I read here!!! For the people out there who are using the Triton to charge LiPo packs, I will be charging Kokam 3 cell 700's, am I going to be able to do the job with the Triton and get performace out of these packs or should I look at a different charger???

You can charge up to 4 with the Triton.

Don't worry about what you're hearing . . . . the Triton is fine.

I may sell mine in the future but only because I might need to charge more than 4 lipos.

Triton problems???

I believe the Triton does have problems when charging Li-Ion and Li-Po batteries.

First you cannot reach the full current you ask for when charging (this is a flaw no matter what they say)! I set it to 1.2 A and it only goes to 0.6 - 0.7A max. The charge curve is not aggressive enough! I wish I had the money to test a Schulze....but I don't want to spend the $400 for the 2-line display model.

Also I noticed when charging sealed lead acid batteries that they play games with the charging routine by pausing to read battery voltage and my 2 Tritons actually stop the charge at near maximum current on the way down. They say that my batteries are bad.....but they just don't want to admit to a problem. Just because not many people complain and the engineers say there is no problem doesn't mean that the charger's software/programming, or firmware isn't flawed!
If I can get out 6500mah out of a 7ah battery and the Triton charges it back with a 4700A/hr capacity something is wrong with the charger.

I also noticed that when chargine the Li-ion batteries and in CV mode the Triton does NOT pause and measure the voltage for 5 seconds.

Maybe someday someone who knows something about batteries and charging will wake up and fix the problem....then we can send them all back for an update!!! The more they sell the more that will be out there with flaws!

I have 2 Tirtons. Charge two 3S4Ps at the same time. I've had no problems at all.
I agree wirh Glenn. "Don't worry about what you're hearing . . . . the Triton is fine."

No the Triton has no problems with charging the LI-PO's they did at first, and there is an update availiable for it, but all the ones sold now have the update, although hpilotrc is right about not being able to select the charge rating properly if you chose 1.2 sometimes it never gets there, but it does charge them to full capicity it just takes a little longer than 1 hour. Mine has the updates, and I ve never had a problem charging Li-Po's or Gel cel batteries.

My Triton with the latest updates never would properly charge a TP 3S4P-7800 pack. It would not properly ramp down the current and would cut before the voltage limit was reached.

By testing the capacity with both a Triton and a Orbit MicroLoader, I was only getting about a 90% charge.

I also had issues when charging lead acid batteries. Same thing, it wouldn't fully ramp down the current and would cut off early.

If you want a GOOD LiPo charger go for the Astro Flight 109D. It costs $130 just like the Triton.

Try shortening your charge led to 12" or so and you should get the full 1 amp charge rate.

Hey guys,

I'm researching lithium polymers for my r/ccar. I was looking at the thumder tiger batteries. I'm thiniking of a 3s4p pack. Will the triton be able to charge this? I know its 3 in series 4 parallel but when you say the triton can only charge 4 cells does that mean it can only charge 4 in series or 4 in series with any parallel combination...

or do i have this wrong and the batteries come in 4 packs of 3 in series so you charge each pack separately and connect them in parallel when you run them?

Thanks,
Keith

That means the Triton can charge your last guess there, "4 in series with any parallel combination..."

The pack will come preassembled in the 3S4P setup.

I assume you mean Thunder Power.

Hey thanks for the quick response.

yes i mean the thunder tiger packs. So it should be fine as long as the pack has any number in parallel but only 4 or less in series.

Thanks,
Keith
