Safety - RC Helis are not toys > Field Directions-EMS Protocol

After learning of the tragedy concerning Ron Kyle and the EMS difficulties I think each of our clubs should make the EMS aware of our locations, and we should have exact directions and protocol listed at our fields for contacting EMS.

Being the president of our club I am going to put together some type of directional information to be posted at the field in case anyone needs to contact 911. I plan on also contacting EMS just to make sure that if contacted, the club can provide the correct information.

I would suggest that each club come up with this safety plan in order to plan for any possible adverse event.

We all learn autos just in case we have an engine out, we should be as adamant about planning for the safety of our club.

I believe that creation of this EMS Protocol for each club would serve to honor the memory of Ron Kyle.

Good point Charles - especially as most fields are "off the beaten track" and EMS may not have much to go on by way of street names etc.

For 911 Info:

I would also include a GPS pin point: As the cell phone part of 911 Emergency Services are linking some cell phones with GPS on map tracking.. @ The Dispatch Center
Something to consider??

My Heart goes out to Ron and the Houston Area R/C Pilots:::

Good idea.

If anyone wants some help with that let me know.
Been a professional firefighter for sometime and was a dispatcher before that.
I am going to do the same thing with our club at the next meeting.

Those are very good ideas. Being new to heli's I decided to go to a funfly first before buying one. Well the funfly was up in Wisconsin and I lived on the southside of Chicago. The person running the funfly emailed me the address and a map to the field. Not knowing the town or the area I went on mapquest. As you can probably guess, mapquest couldn't even find it. If the people running the funfly didn't put up a big sign at the entrance I wouldn't of even found it. They gave me a good map but the entrance didn't look like it went to a flying field. I'm not trying to defend the paramedics in Houston but they are from that area. The local authorities must of known of that flying field. We should all make sure that they do know of the fielding fields and how to get to them.

My heart and thoughts go out to Ron and his family.

Our club has two fields. We make a $100 donation annually to each of the rescue squads that support each field. I'm not sure what the rescue squads have been told about our fields, but hopefully the donation servers as a reminder that we're there.

I am spearheading the effort to post a similar sign at our Birmingham field.

I plan to visit the appropriate police, fire, and rescue groups for the field within the next 2 weeks.

Has anyone completed such a sign?

Care to share your design?

Thanks,
Galen Tillery

In the works.

Well with overwhelming approval last night at the club meeting the "heli guy" actually got some support on this one.
I am writing up a new "plan" and some site improvements this week.
When I get it done I will post a link for anyone interested in reading it.

In the works...

Ours is in the works also. I discussed the matter at out meeting last week, knowing that I would probably hear some "I told you they were dangerous" from some of the grumps. I started the theme out by asking the guys how many fatalities occured this year with rc models,,,,They paid a little more attention when we discussed how many were killed by airplanes in the last year and a half.

Anyway, group understands the thinking on my part and support the importance of enforcing our safety measures more effectively. I will post when we have our sign ready.

Thanks

Charles
