Was out this morning practicing some more nose-in, and I get more and more comfortable w/ it everytime I do it, and I was having alot of fun so I decided to quit for the morning, charge the batteries and FINALLY take off my training gear for good this evening. My last big hurdle. Feels great. So, after coming in and telling my wife about my nose-in and my plans for this evening, I started to clean off my R30 and I noticed my right boom support was broke right at the screw area. Man, that just sucked.

Anyway, I just ordered some carbon boom supports from Heliproz, so hopefully I can have some fun this weekend.

Can't win them all, I guess....

Rob,

You can still fly tonight just take both supports off and cut the other one to match the broken one then flatten the ends of both and drill new holes re-install and your ready to go. They will be a little shorter but this is no problem. Happy flying!

I never thought of that. I may just try it and see.

Thanks,

I have done that exact thing, works great until your nice carbon ones come in. You will have to move the horizontal stab forward a touch, but tht will not affect anything for you. Go for it and keep flying.

Here's a good way to fix broken boom supports. I did this when my stock ones cracked, and it worked great (for under $3!).

If and when I crash my R-30 bad enough that I need new boom supports I'll just buy some R-60 supports and shorten them, they are cheap and tough.

But Christianzx's fix looks good too.

Never let a broken boom support stop you from flying. Just take the other one off and go. You dont even need them in the first place. They look cool and may do a little good but they are definately not needed to fly. My Concept 30 DX never had them and never needed them.

They do serve a purpose but if you are just working on nose in hovering i'm sure you would have no problem at all with out them, however if you are doing piroflips you got to have them.

Hey robb, if you are confident that you don't need training gear anymore, build 2 pairs of R30 boom supports using those training gear carbon fiber tubes. I built 2 pairs out of my helimax training gear and they worked really good. I built them as per christianzx's method but i used plastic shelf support instead of the metal ones. I figured if this plastic support can handle heavy load of groceries in my pantry, it can handle my raffy. Actually the reason is i can't find this metal shelf support in my local home depot. Hope this helps.

My training gear consisted of 2 wooden dowel rods and wiffle balls. I had the helimax training gear, but the rods broke so I decided to make my own.

Thanks guys for your help.

I admit it.

Yes I am testifying I crashed. Not once but 3 times. I have burnt about 10 gallons so far in my Raptor 30 and I still have the original supports. They have been bent, straightened out, bent again, straightened out. My secret. I put small rubber washers with 1/8" holes in them on each side of the boom supports. Between the frame and support and between the support and screw along with a flat washer. They absorb and dampen the vibration to the support. When I first heard about the problems with the Raptor support braces, I looked at a few broken ones from other peoples heli's and deduced that it was metal fatique. I think I was right. Mine show no signs of breaking yet. Knock on wood.
Bought them from Home Depot for 2 cents each.

yeah, they serve a purpose

I'm pushing ~800 logged flights on R30s NEVER having screwed on the boom supports nor horizontal stab. I fly intermediate 3D including alot of tailfirst both upright & inverted. But this is not about skill level. It's about living proof of just how functional those supports actually are, namely not very. So yeah, they DO serve a purpose alright...negative cash flow from your wallet...not that i begrudge TT the financial support from supports...they deserve it so...why don't you definitely replace them. Supports also help beginners, who think them necessary, to sleep better. Tell you what. If you can tell the difference in handling characteristics (or in any other characteristics) between an R30 with & without boom supports, which i doubt very much as you can probably guess, then you really owe yourself a higher priced bird. If not, then all the more reason why you should be getting stick time rather than sitting around until new supports arrive.

I can hear it now. "Oh, I can turn my gyro gain up 3 points with the supports on." Uhh...oo...gee...gosh AND golly...wow. ;-)

Jrice45516,

You're probably right, I doubt that I could tell the difference between a supported boom and a non supported boom. However I'm confident that the advice I gave in my earlier post is valid.

Jon,

Yeah, guess I kinda jinks myself on that one. Oh well. Looks crummy outside anyway. Tomorrow isn't looking too hot either. Saturday and Sunday should be better and my supports should be here tomorrow.

We gotta hook up and go fly again. I will be at the St. Louis funfly in June!

Are you running the extended tail boom on your rappy? I am running the 50 conversion and was wondering if the extended boom doesn't need the tail supports either.....

All this talk of no supports... do whatever you want, but they are there for a reason. Don't try and talk other people into not using them just so you feel better about your own setup. It does not take a Masters of Engineering to figure out that a triangle is stronger than just a tube. You will see this difference in gain points, and most likely the lifespan of the rear frame section on the raptor. If they were really not needed, believe me, ace and every other heli manufacturer would have omitted them for cost saving reasons.
If you aren't seeing a difference with the stock supports on vs. off, chances are your horiz fin mount is not tight enough on the boom to do any good. Ideally this should be an aluminum clamping unit, but a few wraps of electrical tape is a sufficient temporay fix.

I ended up getting the TT CF boom supports, one of the best upgrades you can buy because if you crash then just pop out.

PS- Don't glue them!

You installed them but did not glue the ends? They are just captured in there right now? The only axis this will support your tail is when it tries to flex down. In any other direction they will do nothing. 30 min epoxy is what you need.
