Very sad day!

Today was very saddening. I started flying about two months ago, my wife and child would go out to Tom Bass on Sat/ Sun. Everytime I got out there as a newbie, people were more than anxious to train and help me. The first day out , I was having problems with my heli and Ron put his helicopter aside and helped me get mine in the air which turned out to be an all day event, he did not even know my first name! Everyday after he would always come by the table to see if I needed anything. Today, I had a man die in my arms while my wife giving cpr along with friends, doing all that was possible to keep him alive until EMS / Sheriff got to the field. I saw every heli guy that I has helped me from day one and that i have great respect for come together to do all they could from running to the beltway to flag down help to staying on the phone constantly giving report and directions. It is a sad day, but I hope all that was there and all that has read the posts take it in all the precautions to flying, though we lost a great friend helping another person.

Very Sorry

Such sad news. My heart goes out to the family. A sad day for all the RC world. Maybe this tragic event will cause us all to use more caution from this day forward and ultimatetly save many from "would be" terrible accidents in the future.

Please let us know if a fund is set up.

Mark anyway of joining the two 'TOM BASS HOUSTON DEATH' topics into one.
Would be easier for people to use one topic header, and more fitting as one large topic for grivience and condolences to his family members......

Very upsetting to hear of such news in our community and I know a very shocking, painful and frustrating time for the family and friends trying to find some understanding in this situation. My best wishes to the family memebers and friends of Ron during the rough times ahead.

My Deepest Sympathy for All of the Families!!!

This is a very terrible event. This is a very sad day. Our prayers go out to the family and friends who have lost a great friend. This is a wakeup call. It is easy to get lazy and overlook the dangers of flying too close.

deepest regret to hear it happened

After seeing the news on TV tonight, I felt very heavy in my heart. Tom Bass is one of flying field. We are like family and friend especially tough to lose one of our own. I have some close call before. First, I want to express my deep sympathy to Ron's family. Also express my understanding to his student. It is a tough day for all of us.

Heli is not easy to learn and fly safe. We may all need to rethink how to avoid such accident happen again.

Now, this news will be spread over the world. Hope we can do something for his family.

Thank you.

Death at the Field

Hi,

I wanted to post about this. My husband was the "student" that Ron was working with today when something went wrong. Ron had been flying the machine and had declared it safe and then handed the controls over to my husband and said you can fly now. He took it and had it hovering beautifully, then a gust of wind blew in, my husband didn't feel comfortable so he was trying to land it, when the machine turned left and shot back towards them. It was in a good range away from them, noone would have known the machine was going to turn left and then fly back. It is a terrible tragedy for everyone involved, my husband feels very bad about the whole thing. But I think the worse part is our 12 year old son witnessed it all, that is what we are having to deal with. I will be seeking counseling for both of them tomorrow. We have Ron and his family in our thoughts and prayers and ask that you keep our family in your prayers too. We are dealing with a terrible loss of a really good friend too. My husband wants to say thank you to everyone who is supporting him and helped with today's situation. Ron only had a brother and some other distant relatives but we would like to know if someone does set up a trust fund for him.

every hobby is dangerous... you could probably kill someone while golfing or skiing. like it was said earlier, if we get too careful we will just be flying paper airplanes while we wear a safety helmet.

things like this are truly sad, but just teach us to be more careful.

Are you for real, are just plain insensitive ????

Also just to add that the 'plank' community has suffered the same thing in the past, and they still continue to fly planks. It is important to share this loss of a fellow Heli R'C'er, and to also learn from this unfortunate incident.

Ron's Death

This is Shun's wife.
A peaceful and beautiful Sunday at the ever popular Tom Bass, my husband, me and our daughter. Ron-some days spending his whole day helping others and never flying his own heli-helping a new pilot and his young son get his heli fine-tuned. We were all sitting around and heard a pop most of us just thought it was yet another wreck-didn't think twice about it-but I looked up and something told me to run as fas as I could.( I am a nurse) while running I see the novice pilot pull the mangled heli off of Ron- the whole time thinking he will be ok. As I approached him I see how horrible the cut really is.His entire jugular vein and carotid artery are completely severed. Me and my husband immediately applied pressure and started CPR. Saddly the severity of the wound was so great that all of our efforts were in vain. My husband talked to him and held his hand the entire time. I have the nickname Lieutanant now for barking out orders. We worked on him for almost 45 minutes- to no avail- he died in our arms. The real issue is the 15 minutes that we wasted fighting on the phone to 911 dispatch who could not find our location and the couldn't decide who to call Harris County or HPD- which is completely ridiculous. The only reason we did get them is because I ran to the road and flagged down a passing officer. What's even worse is that not one of the 20-25 people who responded to the call picked up a finger to help us!!!!When the cops arrived they stood around doing nothing! I am screaming for LifeFlight and he's telling me it's not his call!! and then the EMS took their precious time- I actually placed the heart leads on him and turned the machine on but he was already gone. Later we found out that they were only 15 min. away so why did it take them 45 min. to respond? Do I really have to stress the safety issues here? Especially new pilots- listen, listen, listen!! and pay attention even if you're not the one with the radio! I hope this is a tragic wake up call for all pilots and bystander. I want to also thank all the pilots at the field( you know who you are) for your patience, help, hugs, love and understanding. Everyone was very supportive and we defiently all pulled together as a team and family- and that's what it's all about. Ron left us doing what he loved most- teaching and helping. I have read all the funds you guys have posted( which is a great idea) Ron was very quiet and humble and from what we know he only had a younger brother- no wife or kids- and I'm sure his parents are either deceased or elderly, so whatever we can come up with would surely help with the arrangements. Thank you also to my wonderful, amazing husband, you are my rock! Let us all learn a lesson from this! Thank you for reading my story and letting me talk about it!

Not the place.

Blair this is not the thread to debate that. Take it to another one if you feel the need.

crazyaboutqheli,
Please tell you husband and your son to talk this out. It was an accident plain and simple. Sometimes "counciling" only burys the problem. Spending time together talking about it might just be the best solution.
We call it CID or "critical incident stress debreifing" in my profession and it is simply all the parties involved talking about what happened and sharing their experiences.
You could probably call the local Fire department and they can put you in touch with a CID cordinator that could arrange it for EVERYONE that was at the field today.
Believe me it works and very well.

I am very sorry about this, and pray for some measure of solace to the families who have to endure this tragedy.

So far there is no indication that this occurred due to a lack of safety practices. It is a terrible reminder to us all that we need to give these models the respect one would give to a loaded gun. Given the number of helis out there, it is fortunate that this has not occurred more often. Tragically, today, real people are irreversibily affected.

We will be having a club meeting to discuss this, from the perspective that some disregard established rules of safety. It's not appropriate to ask that this not happen again, it is unthinkable that it happened at all.

Please redouble your focus on safety, and increase the distance between helis and people.

Thanks
