Shun Senior Heliman Location: Houston, Tx
| Ron's DeathThis is Shun's wife.
A peaceful and beautiful Sunday at the ever popular Tom Bass, my husband, me and our daughter. Ron-some days spending his whole day helping others and never flying his own heli-helping a new pilot and his young son get his heli fine-tuned. We were all sitting around and heard a pop most of us just thought it was yet another wreck-didn't think twice about it-but I looked up and something told me to run as fas as I could.( I am a nurse) while running I see the novice pilot pull the mangled heli off of Ron- the whole time thinking he will be ok. As I approached him I see how horrible the cut really is.His entire jugular vein and carotid artery are completely severed. Me and my husband immediately applied pressure and started CPR. Saddly the severity of the wound was so great that all of our efforts were in vain. My husband talked to him and held his hand the entire time. I have the nickname Lieutanant now for barking out orders. We worked on him for almost 45 minutes- to no avail- he died in our arms. The real issue is the 15 minutes that we wasted fighting on the phone to 911 dispatch who could not find our location and the couldn't decide who to call Harris County or HPD- which is completely ridiculous. The only reason we did get them is because I ran to the road and flagged down a passing officer. What's even worse is that not one of the 20-25 people who responded to the call picked up a finger to help us!!!!When the cops arrived they stood around doing nothing! I am screaming for LifeFlight and he's telling me it's not his call!! and then the EMS took their precious time- I actually placed the heart leads on him and turned the machine on but he was already gone. Later we found out that they were only 15 min. away so why did it take them 45 min. to respond? Do I really have to stress the safety issues here? Especially new pilots- listen, listen, listen!! and pay attention even if you're not the one with the radio! I hope this is a tragic wake up call for all pilots and bystander. I want to also thank all the pilots at the field( you know who you are) for your patience, help, hugs, love and understanding. Everyone was very supportive and we defiently all pulled together as a team and family- and that's what it's all about. Ron left us doing what he loved most- teaching and helping. I have read all the funds you guys have posted( which is a great idea) Ron was very quiet and humble and from what we know he only had a younger brother- no wife or kids- and I'm sure his parents are either deceased or elderly, so whatever we can come up with would surely help with the arrangements. Thank you also to my wonderful, amazing husband, you are my rock! Let us all learn a lesson from this! Thank you for reading my story and letting me talk about it! |
