What would you recommend as a good blade balancer?I've seen lots of them advertised at all kinds of prices.I dont't want junk but I don't want to break my budget.

Balancer

The Top Flight Prop Balancer is excellent. It uses magnets for a frictionless support of the part being balanced. The use of the magnets allow for great accuracy in balancing small diameter items on helis such as fans and main gears.

but he asked for a *blade* balancer.

Get the Koll Rotor Pro if your going to spend
the money in the first place. About $80.

Blade Balancer

I would say YES!!! I got a K&S Rotor, Blade Balancer it was about $50 I think. But remember that the serface the balancer is on must be level, so it is a good idea to have a small bubble level to check your surface, then calibrate the balancer make sure there are no wind drafts in the room, and just take your time. I did the wood blades but they are a must to balance. The tail rotor blades also need to be balanced. Some of the tail rotor blades need to be balanced and some don't, but you should at least check them before you install them on your heli. I found that took all the tail vibration out on my heli.
I have a set of SAB4 550mm Carbon Fiber blades and they were right on balance, as well as the SAB 80mm trail blades. Matched weighted blades work the best.

The Koll is the best out there and runs around $80 but worth it.

Dubro High Point Balancer?

Are i am right, to balance fans or gears i do this with a high point balancer such as the Dubro from Rick?

Would the Dubro complement the Koll?

Kind regards

The Dubro is a good balancer for Fans. Never seen anyone have to balance a gear. Koll will accomplish anything you need with blades by itself. I hope that answers your question. If you want to check your fans the dubro will do it as it will also balance props. Should be able to get one of these at your LHS for $20 if you have vibration and want to rule out the fan. Rays Manual will have a pic of it and how to do it.

The Koll IMO is the only choice as it is the one available I know of that balances both span and chordwise. Indeed, its really expensive for such a simple adjustment.

For several years I blew off doing the chordwise blade balancing ( I just balanced the whole rotor chordwise and called it good). I was thinking it wouldn't be that far off and shouldn't be a big factor: WRONG! It is as equally important (maybe more??) if you want a smooth heli. The eye opener was when I installed floats on one of my birds. With the chordwise balance I couldn't spin up the blades on water due to the ground resonance shaking the heli into the water--Ugly. Well I finally made the conversion to CF composite blades. Once installed water run-ups instantly worked. Why? Magic CF?? Nope! At that point, I balanced my trusty old woodies with a friends Koll and Bingo!, they worked as well as the CF for water runnups and their flight characteristics were unbelievably improved. Had I known 2 years earlier.... Well you get the idea. For those with severe ground resonance problems chordwise balance may be the solution. What tees me is that the other <50 buck balancers don't do chordwise. C'mon KSJ, XCell, Helimax and ect. we heli addicts are insane on tuning so the market is there!! make us a cheap one that does it all. I don't care if its anodized or not.

You can get Ray's Helicopter manual at heliproz for $19.99 make sure you get the $19.99 one this is the latest 4th edition, they also sell $14 for the 3rd edition, you don't want that.

yes you are right the highpoint complements the koll because the koll does blades, the highpoint everything else.
