im mean the part in the raptor 30 manual where it says to disasemble the grips on the blade and glue them with epoxy
do u really need this if u r a begginer and only practice hovering and forward flight or is it necessary only for advanced and 3D flight???

Yes you do need to glue the blades, it's even more important when you are learning to hover due to how close you are to the helicopter, if it threw a blade in your direction it could end your helicopter flying days or someone else's.

YES, no matter what.

I threw a woodie a while ago at the top of a stall turn, heli was totaled, and luckilly no one was hurt. I only use composite blades anymore, but that is just me.

Yes, #&%@ right you do !!

My Raptor threw a main on it's third flight, descending 2Ft off the ground from a hover, 14/15Ft from my 12 year old son, and the heli blew apart, there was over $220 in damage !!!

blade mod

I just got a crash kit for the 30 & there was epoxy in the kit with directions to use it on the blades.

No, just use good ol' epoxy. I checkered the underside of my blade grips with a #11 hobby knife to give the epoxy something to hold onto. Just go over it one way, rotate 90 degrees and go over it again, sort of like #. My lines were about 1/8" apart. I figure the epoxy might have a hard time holding onto that smooth surface of the blade grip and i figure it can't hurt. Make sure you take the covering off under the grips too. Mark a line around the grips before you take them off, then cut the covering carefully 1/8" inside your line thereby leaving some under the edge of the grip when you reinstall them.

Picture this!

You did not glue the blades as per the instructions. Your hovering in front of yourself. Oh lets say 1 to 6 feet high. All of a sudden the blade which by the way will have a tip speed of 300 to 450mph flies out of the grip. Now you tell us what do you think? Should you waste the time to glue it? If you don't glue it and it flies out and hits you or a friend, family pet, other club member will you post some pictures of the results and a warning to all the newcomers about how dangerous it can be not to?

Twobeers has a strong point !
Add to his description that a Rappy 30 blade at say 1800 RPM
will strain the rotorhub with a weigth between 150-200 kilograms
now picture one blade coming at you at 300 to 450 mph and know
that it has an impact force of anything from 50 to 150 kilos depending of how far from your heli you are standing ! The manuals do not state "this is not a toy" just for fun
Our hobby is a great one indeed, but beware it can altso BITE you if you are careless/sloppy about it !

biggest mistake ive seen 2dy

this bonding of the main blade root stiffners has been incorrectly referred to as a blade modification/this is standard practice and has always been absolutely necessary/most woodies are a combination of breadboard style lamination of hardwood on the leading edge and decreasingly softer and lighter woods as you work back toward the trailing edge/most symetrical airfoil constant chord blades have an aerodynamic center and chord cg 1/3 back from the leading edge and that is where the root is drilled/if the blade is not properly prepared/by sanding the underside of the plastic stiffner and removing all but the edge of the underlying blade covering one is totally dependent on the strength of the lamination and the plastic covering for his very life!/NOT A MODIFICATION JUST STANDARD PRACTICE AS ALWAYS/recently manufacturers have possibly made things a little too easy for beginners and serious mistakes are all too easily made without proper guidance! Man oh man be careful! Im surprised that no one at your field has warned you about this/Geeeeeez man doesnt anybody, anybody at all out in your neck of the woods care about you!? You could kill, be killed, mame or be mamed and never know what hit you for christ's sake man!!!! The kit blades come with 5min epoxy but the best to use is a slow cure epoxy or a special tire ca for rc cars called ic2000 which is basically a gap filling thick slow cure ca with rubber type flex additive. Remember slower is stronger and jb weld is out of the question, too brittle and too heavy.

The stock woodies will get you quite far, if you glue them and balance them properly, heck those guy's scared the crud out of me, but don't be afraid to use them for learning to hover and exploring simple loops, roll's, auto's, inverted by the time you get good at these you won't want the wood blades anymore. Now if you buy a 60 size heli throw the wood blades away and get composite blades, if you can afford a 60 sized heli you can afford composite blades.
