I don't have a flying field or club (that I know of) near by. So I joined AMA the other day for the insurance reasons.

I am just wondering why others have joined/not joined?

thanks

I flew for almost a year and a half at our field without AMA insurance. I kept putting it off, but one day I almost cut my chest open with the heli blades after a radio hit and I really got to thinking. Funny enough, I still didn't join until one day I went out to the field and they were having a event. I really wanted fly so I joined AMA to fly that day. It is comforting to know that I am protected by AMA though and I am going to renew in January.

How Many are AMA Members?

I'm a member of M.A.A.C. , this is the Canadian version, if you don't have AMA or M.A.A.C. coverage you don't fly at our field. For the few dollars that it costs to join it seems silly not to, considering the possible costs of any damage, or even worse injuries that may result from an accident. ------BladeRunner.

AMA

You will find it's a requirement to fly at AMA santioned fields or at almost any heli fun fly, santioned or not. The insurance is one of the biggest reasons, for both the organizer and the individual. Does it mean the AMA pilots are better, I don't think I would say that, but most do read the rules and these help protect the bystander and pilots alike. In the end, you get a magazine that should start having helicopter articles again soon as a side bonus.

Club Field Requirement

Like many, I put off joining for years until required to have a card to fly at my AMA sanctioned club field. The insurance is nice, but a decent homeowners policy has higher coverage amounts. Wish the org would become more Heli friendly. Maybe a new president will help that.

Does it cover heli's

I was reading through the AMA website about the coverage and it mentions that they cover cars, boats and planes but I never saw anything about Heli's. I thought about getting it but I am not sure if they cover me. I don't have home owners insurance because I live on a Navy base.
Let me know and post a link where it says it.
Thanks.

How Many are AMA members?

I'm pretty sure that the AMA coverage is the same as the MAAC coverage here in Canada, or very close anyway. Don't be confused, the coverage is only for liability, that is it does not cover your aircraft-it only covers damage to persons or property-like if you hit their car or go through a windshield or injure someone. Helis are aircraft so flying one is the same as a glider or other aircraft. I believe that the limit here is $5 million with a $250.00 deducable. The cost here is $44.50 per yr. Why ANYONE would fly without it escapes me For the low premium that you pay it's a very good deal and well worth having.------BladeRunner

Just renewed mine last Sat online. Got my old number back after several years ago flying planks. Sorta feels like coming out of retirement aka Michael Jordan. Yikes, I wish.

The coverage is suplementary insurance, in other words, after your homeowner's is exhausted then the AMA kicks in. That's why it's so inexpensive. Most of the time the AMA doesn't pay damages it's the homeowner's policy who pays the majority of the claims.
The single most important issue for us is the liability coverage for the owner of the fields. That is the insurance that puts the owner's mind at ease and helps us getting flying sites.

I am a member of the BMFA, the UK equivalent. You do not fly at our field if you are not a member, and I believe at most flying sites in the UK you have to be a BMFA member also.

The AMA also lobbies to keep our frequencies from being gobbled up by corporate sharks for pagers, cel phones, etc.

I had SportsFlyers Insurance for about three years, then as most of you who were members know, they folded right after everyone paid their dues a couple of years ago. Our small club requires insurance, so there was no choice but go with AMA.

I am a member of AMA. I have been for a few years now. Do it as a requirement to fly at the fields and for the insurance above homeowners. Thats the only reason i assure you. The one thing that I do not like about it, They really have no interest in printing or participating in Heli related things. You would think out of a magazine of 100+ pages we would get atleast 20. But no, we only get one or two that don't amount to much. I emailed the president (Dave Brown) and questioned this. He did not give me much of a reply needless to say without quoting it. Funny thing though, In the next two issues after I emailed him, the Heli stuff was not in there at all. I sent him a professional email too. It was not one that was aimed to tick someone off. I have nothing against airplanes, but we deserve some attention here. After all, were heli pilots, the cream of the crop.

AMA Member ?

Well, I have been a AMA member since 1978 when I started flying R/C helicopters. The Reason I joined was it was a club regulation. Plus going to fun fly's they required them.
For the price it is pretty cheap. You get magazine once month plus have insurance and go to any flying field. I would say 98% of the clubs are AMA.
If you want to go to fun fly's or contest and fly you need to be a member.

It's a requirement for flying at our club field. Mostly AMA insurance is for the flying site land owner's protection. Your homeowner's or renter's insurance (if you have them) is primary. AMA is considered secondary insurance and kicks in when all others are exhausted.

Sometimes it is a necessary evil for our hobby. I, for one, have not seen a single thing that has directly benifitted me in the pursuit of this hobby from the AMA. The magazine is marginal, at best, and there are way better publications out there. I haven't hear a single instance where they have helped secure a flying site. Sure, they send you an information packet, but that doesn't help you convince a land owner to let you fly there. Every club I've had experience with has had to do that all on their own.

As you can see I have no overly fond feelings towards the AMA. And these are just my opinions.......

I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in the frequencies the FCC 'let us have'. If there is someone with enough money and 'more need' than we have they we'll be gone in a heartbeat.

Don't think remote crane operators and other industrial concerns might have their eye on those frequencies we have. If big money wants them then we're gone. The FCC would sell us out in a heartbeat. I have no trust of them or any other government organization. Think I'm talking out of my hat? Ask anyone in high power rocketry how they feel about the BATF.

Like I said before, in MY opinion, the AMA has done jack for the average flyer and even less for heli fliers. You need to join for the insurance and that's the primary, number one reason. You want to fly in a contest or at most any public or private field then you need to have AMA. To me it's blood money, pure and simple.

I'm a member becuse I HAVE to. I don't think much of the crappy monthly magazine (they could keep it for all I care), and their insurance only picks up after you've exhausted your homeowner's insurance. So unless you're renting your place you won't see much to be covered by them. But again, it's only $4 a month so I can live with it, but I keep wishing I would not have to pay for something "big brotherly" that I'll never ever use.
