Main Discussion > Airtronics Stylus - is anyone flying it ?

Hello guys.
the Stylus is looking more and more interesting and i wanted to check a few things out:

1. i can see on www.airtronics.net that the Stylus now comes with blue sticks and is rated "The world fastest respose PCM radio" - what im wondering is - is this a new model of the Stylus or is this the same one that was always around ? i can tell you for sure that the sticks are new (it used to come with silver sticks) so im not really sure...

2. who's here flying a Stylus (besides Alan Jr). who can comment on its functions and performance over time ? does it have all the needed options ? how reliable is it ?

3. any comments are welcome.

thanks.

It could be they've updated the Stylus but I haven't heard anything. Last year though they were talking about the updated stick ends. The blue ones come standard on the RD8000 and I guess now on the Stylus???

But, check this out;

http://www.airtronics.net/Stick%20Ends.htm

You guys with current RDs and Stylus models will be able to buy the new stick ends.

Mike

BTW.... I "think" they will also fit JR radios

Stylus

I've had my Stylus for almost 4 years, and it's my favorite radio still (I've got a JR 9x too). It doesn't have a big screen but I find the programming to be very easy. All the switches are assignable, and you are never obsolete because of the program cards. The 50 model memory card is also a nice feature, especially if you fly both planes and helis. It also has a great feel to it, and doesn't drain the batteries too fast. The one feature I really like is the "display on" function which allows you to turn on the radio without turning on the RF so you can program your radio without transmitting a signal.

I am using Stylus.

I had bought it in Japan 2 months ago, it cost me around USD375.00 with 4 1411 servo. As they can only provide Japanese manual, it cost me a lot of time to tranlate it.

At this price range, its hand feeling is the best I had ever try.

I have had a Stylus ever sence it first came out. I love it. I had a 9C for a while an it was nowhere near the radio that the Stylus was. The Stylus is very flexible. Without the heli card it is an above average 8ch radio, but when you add the heli card it rivals the 9Z and 10X. The display on feature is great like Gauchers said. It saves the Tx batterys when you set it up. It also comes with a DSC cord, very nice in my opinion. I don't think this radio gets the respect it deserves partly because it doesn't have a big screen. It has loads of features and is very easy to program. I found the best price on the Heli cart through Airtronics directly. I think it was $110. Call to make sure.

I've been using my Stylus since they first came out. Its been a very good radio. The basic programming does need an upgrade though. In order to do CCPM you'll need the upgrade card which in today's environment should be standard programming.

I don't recall the exact prices so go to these places and check around.

You can get them at the Shopatron website from the main Airtronics web site. www.airtronics.net

You can also get them from at Heliproz. They don't list all the ways the Stylus is available so if you want just a transmitter only you'll need to call them.

Robbefan,

If you are in Israel, your best bet to get the Stylus for cheap would be to order from Ishiimokei in Japan (www.ishiimokei.com). They will have the best price for sure. Drop them an e-mail (mc@ishiimokei.com) - they will take care of you.

The bottomline is if you want 10X & 9Z performance but don't want to pay the 10x & 9z pricetag, the Stylus is the perfect radio because it is such a better value. After all, it seems to work for Hashimoto just fine...

I have had this Stylus for about 2 years and us it for everything. Heli's, Airplane, Parachute Guy, Zagi, and Sail planes. This radio will do it all.

I bought a stylus almost three years ago this janurary, when i bought mine i just got the transmitter and reciever for 540 shipped! Soon after i bought the stylus i bought the CCPM card for my furbie. That card stand along is better im my opinion than any of the 9Z's or 10X's. It shows throttle points from 0-100 on the main screen along with name, voltage, and mode. I also purchased the 50 model memory and all i have to say is that it gona take me awhile to fill all them up. Having flown the 10x and 9z the stylus is the fastest response of allof them. the radio its self fits nicesly in the palms and so easy to use and many many many features for tweakin here andthere. its has alternate flight modes with programmable switches, dynamic trim memory with a flip of a switch, can switch between models without having to turn the radio off also with a flip of a switch.... i could go on for hours. theres nothing new about the new stylus expect the gimbles ends, but for the RD8000 they had to make a cheaper 8ch reciever than 189, so the price dropped to like 149 or 139 cant remember. DO not know if theres any quailty drop or if they just dropped it to make it afforable, but iguess well never know.

PS if you purchase we have seen brown out issues on 4.8volts so we use 6 volt packes with regulators to slove this, also be cautious of radio hits because Airtronics radios love to pick them up. GOOD LUCK AND I SUGGEST YOU GET ONE! 539 for top line radio that is as good if not better than the 9z that cost close to a Grand.

thanks.

Stylus

I have been really happy with mine. In the past three years it has not missed a beat. People will tell you that it does not have digital trim but with the Heli card it actually has trim functions that work exactly like digital trims (but with Mechanical trim feel). Trim changes only affect the mode you are in when the power is tuned on, and you are in that mode. I find that the Stylus can be programmed to do just about anything you can think of. It has stick switches (you can set up a mid stick throttle beep), all of the switches are assignable, you can even assign the momentary switch to alter your head speed points, or gyro gain for in flight setup and adjustments. I am really impressed with the radio and find it easy to use and setup.

Also everyone who picks it up comments on how well the sticks feel and heavy the TX is. It defiantly feels like a good quality Tx to hold and fly with. I like it and would buy it again knowing what I know now.

I might get me another Stylus..

So I could have two to do buddy box. I am also putting 94758Z servos ( very nice packaging by the way ) on my next heli and using Duralite 4000 mah with switch regulator.
To me the Stylus will meet your expectation at any time and any place and cost less than other major competitive brand,
The brown out ( know as a radio lock out ) and radio hits have nothing to do with the radio but I believe it from the compatible choice of servo and battery that require to run ccpm, along with zillion other possible cause, It will happen to any heli. Be sure to program your Stylus correct to avoid cross channel ..

you can run 4.8 volts on servos that do not drain large amounts of current. I am running 5 digital servos that are top end and it sucks power, this is my reason for runing 6volts. there is nothing wrong with4.8 people use them all the time. i am just sayin airtronics like power, so i give it power, or you can do what QUOC does and run duralite 4000mah packs and never worry about anything. so dont worry about it unles you buy one and see brown outs or sudden pauses in controls.

Furyextremester, i fly GY601 gyros, which dont work on 6V, but i fly 2400-2700 Mah 4.8V Nimh packs, this packs never gave me a problem when flying with 4 digital Futaba servos - you think i could still have a problem ?
thanks.

Depend on how aggressive your flying and the load on those servos.
You are good for sport flying but I would not be at peace flying around and feel confidence for these reason:
1- Nimh when they fail they are wide open ( cold turkey ) no warning, no slow down on servo, they just quit.
2- If you used all digital and fly X3D , you are pulling a lot of amps and some time depend on the condition of the battery pack. You are drawing too much current and it will drop of below 4.8 V . Then you have a radio lock out and could be nasty if your fail safe on CCPM is not set to level.
3- Regulator will also help you filter lot of digital servo noise that could lead to radio intereference, specially when the servo arms start to jitter.( Hitech servo are worse, even when they are new, I've been there )
You could also run 2400 mah / 5 cells/ 6v with Jaccio regulator 5.1V and have 4-6 flights but my 4000mah Li-ion weight alot less then that pack and smaller at above 7.4 V

This heli is flying with 4x Futaba digitals and i could easily get 5-6 flights on 2700 Mah Nimh, probably even more:
