Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > Fan Balancing???

I'm currently in the process of building my Fury .60 and I've got a question about balancing the fan. It's on the Robart right now with the collets I'm going to use on the engine, a YS .61ST2.

No matter how I reposition everything, the fan still falls to one point indicating the heavy side. In the past I've sanded away at the plastic on the fan in the heavy area but I'm now wondering if thats really the proper way to do it. Should I grind a little of the aluminum hub instead?? or maybe in addition to the plastic??

I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Mike

Mike,

I do not think you should alter the aluminum hub, instead, work on the plastic only. I balanced a all aluminum fan for my fury .91 and it was a real bastard to do, but it is done and runs real sweet. So keep at it and try to borrow a friends balancer to check against yours?

<<...an all aluminum fan... was a real bastard...>>

I hear you. I put one on my ST, and worked on that thing for a good three hours to get it right. But it is certainly smooth now...

Mike, have you checked your balance rod for straightness? If it has even the slightest bend, it will go the low side every time. Same deal for a tight or flat spot in one of the "wheels".

Steve,
I'm pretty sure the rod is okay. The reason I repositioned eveything a few times was to make sure the heavy side is really the heavy side and not some other factor.

When you sand the plastic, Should you sand the bottom of the fan or the fins themselves???.... Both???

Thanks,
Mike

the bottom only. the fins could fail if you weaken them by removal of the material.

Yup; stay away from the fins. From the sound of your imbalance, it's time to get out the hand drill and remove material more aggressively.

I use a 3/16" bit held in an electric drill chuck that I bought for jobs such as this. You don't want to risk drilling through the fan with a power tool. Using it in your hand allows total control over how much plastic is removed.

Mark the heavy side, then pick a spot as near as possible to that point as you can get, without being under a fin. The farther out on the fan you go, the more effect a given amount of removed material will have. Just make a nice divot (three or four turns of the bit); a little bit at a time is the name of the game here.

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the info. I took my time and got it done. I also went out and bought a dial indicator that takes measurements from the inside diameters. I set-up my engine and the dial indicator to read the inside bore of the fan hub where the nut is. At first I was reading about .0025" of runout. I read in another thread that Min Air recommends a "precisely" placed whack to the hub to bring the total to about .001". So..... thats what I did and now I'm reading just a hair over .001" consistently.

I've never gone to this much trouble so I'm really curious to see if it pays off.

Also, I'm now thinking I should have taken the motor apart and balanced the crankshaft as per John Benario's "Hover" article in last months RCM. I did it to the Enya .60 in my PHI TornadoII and it does run smoother. I guess maybe I'll do it after I get the engine broke in and the warranty is over.

Gotta Love It,
Mike
