e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Schulze & Power supply ???

I am checking chargers with more LiPo capacity than my Triton. I like the Schulze 330d but I read on their manual that they can only be used with car batteries and NOT with power supplies because of the stability needed for the micro processor

SEE: [URL=http://www.greatmodeldeals.com/support/schulze_battery_charger.htm]

Is there a similar powerful charger whjich also can be operated from a power supply ????

Thanks

Yeah, that's what Schulze says in their manual, but they actually have a few power supplies on their product list which is available on their website.

I don't see a problem when using a real high quality power supply.

I will be using an Astron SS-30M power supply with my Schulze isl6-636+RS.

My Schulze just arrived so I just need to rig up some binding posts for the huge aligator clips on the end of the 636 cords....

Congrats, you got yourself the best of the best.

Thanks for the info. Where did you buy your charger and power supply ???

I bought the charger from Hoellein.com in Germany. Unfortunately, the dollar is sucking wind against the Euro so the savings was as great as it would've been a few months ago, but it was still cheaper than ordering from the US importer.

I'm a ham so I picked up the Astron at a local hamfest from KJI Electronics and they do mail order as well. Gene at KJI is a great guy.

The Astron is a really nice supply. I just hope 25A is enough for the Schulze. Unfortunately, the largest switcher Astron has is 25A, but it will do 30A ICS.

MFJ has a 45A switcher which would probably be my next choice if the Astron 25A isn't enough, but I doubt I'll need it. The Astrons are very hight quality supplies and their ratings are on the conservative side.

Astron p/s

I bought the Astron VS-20M and it works well, it has adjustable current and voltage so I use it for other applications as well like my anodizing tank. One thing is to set the amerage/current to max because if your charger starts asking for more than you have set it for (say you have it set for a max of 5 amps and it wants 7) it will drop voltage output and the schulze will complain!

PS I bought this at my local radio shack and they recommended it over their own.

If you're worried about a stable power source, and you're a Ham, why would you buy a switcher? Aren't they more prone to put out a "dirty" signal than a non-switching supply?

The switcher is a matter of size and weight. My Astron SS-30M switcher weights about 5 pounds while my Astron RS-20 weighs almost 20 pounds. The Astron switchers are very clean and they're used a lot in the Amateur Radio community. There is a review of switchers in (I believe) the Jan. 2000 QST issue if you're interested.
