Tail upgrades

From PXB's suggestion I just ordered more upgrades from DEETEE. (great company to deal with)
Now i have all metal tail box, metal tail bellcrank, speed up gears and titanium shaft.
I just ordered the Machined tail hub and grips, walts tail drive shaft, the stainless slider sleeve, and walts oneway main gear upgrade.

Next im replacing all the bearings with Boca and if that doesn't fix my problems with this thing Im selling it!!!

Hi Airshare,

I have found that the increase in RPM from the 16T gear and the added length of the metal tail shaft contribute to the tail vibration. I solved my tail vibration problem by adding 2 more LO260 bearings(3 in total) to the tail boom. I now use the CF tail shaft and the 18T to 18T gears and I installed the tail rotor servo about 2 inches from the gear box, this has stopped the vibration and the heli flies great.

Hornet Issues

Hi PXB..I have a hornet which is highly modified. There is one rule I have learned in the 26 plus years of heli flying. The bigger the heli, the more stable the heli, all things being equal. The hornet is a great ship to play with if you can fly well, but really is not a great learner.

If you want to continue to fly with it, and dont want to tinker, I would suggest sending it to someone who will take the time to set it up correctly and actually test fly it.

I have 3 micro helis, and an eco 8. The eco 8 is a pretty decent heli to learn with, when equipped with a heading hold gyro, brushless motor, etc.

I would be glad to help via email or phone if you want. I work from home and tinker on the helis all day.

Later, and good luck!

Hi Prolodoc,

Tell me more about that Gunship you used to fly.

Gunship

UH-1B, 1969-1970. I really want to do a scale turbine project of it. I have a small ( piccolo ) Huey, and love to fly it, but want to convert on of my turbines to the Huey. Did you fly them also?

Prolodoc,

"If you want to continue to fly with it, and dont want to tinker, I would suggest sending it to someone who will take the time to set it up correctly and actually test fly it."

Are you volunteering?!!!

I got all my parts in and have the new tail setup, but it is still pretty bad. I have been doing the test flights in the basement, so there may have been some rough air off the walls but the tail is still loose. It will hold reasonably solid but then will break loose 30-40 degs before settling down. It scares me when it does that. I can hear the stress on the gear mesh and I just get that nasty feeling something is about to explode. It is not really a tail wag -- just a big, unexpected jump every 4 to 5 seconds (jump always goes nose right if that is a clue).

Stability has never been an issue, in fact, just the opposite it was too stable. I think I have cured that problem with the lightened 3D paddles and running 2100 RPM - it is very spicy on high rates now. If it is a nice today tomorrow I am going to play with some inverted but if the tail breaks loose I may be in for some deep deep doo doo.

I am getting excited now because the tinker to flying ratio is starting to improve - maybe even breaking even!!

Take it easy -- pxb
