Hi there,

Iam sorry to go off topic slightly........but, I have just got an FG Marder 5th scale car that is running a G230RC motor.

This thing is great fun, and a good way of killing time waiting for a frequency peg, or just to relieve stress.

The trouble is it eats plugs faster than my kid can eat biscuits. At 5pounds a throw it is getting silly and more stressfull than flying 5grands worth of cameraship amongst planks.

I am sharing the fuel with my gasser which runs fine on 64:1 kingcobra racing oil.

Please can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers,
Evan

Can you show a pic of one of these eaten plugs or describe how it looks. The only one I have break was after a fligh and the plug cover goes out with the inner metallic part that runs into the ceramic.

When you say 'Eats' do you mean the plugs fail to work or that they physically break?

If they fail to spark but seem to be OK to look at, there is a good chance that they are glazing. Thanks to the top quality UL fuel we get in the UK and an air cooled engine(running much hotter than the heli, I would guess) the additives in the fuel solidify on the plug and insulate the center electrode.

Go to your local garden machinery outlet and buy some Briggs and Stratton ' Fuel-Fit'. It is a fuel stabiliser which you add to fresh fuel. It will not affect the running of the engine and should prevent any further plug glazing.

Yes they do look ok, just no spark.

I will try and get some of that stuff and give it a go.

Evan,
Few things to consider:

1. you might want to check is the gap of your coil and the flywheel, check to see if the gap is 0.3 - 0.4mm Use a Air Gap Gauge to measure the gap.

2. make sure your kill switch not accidentally grounded.

3. Plug gap.. Adjust to 0.6 - 0.7mm

4. Burnt out of electrode - replace spark plug

5. Ignition coil failure - replaced coil.

Thanks to all for your replys.

The plugs were glazing - I gave them a rub with a wire brush and they are as good as new. I am glad I didn't throw them away!

Next job is to work out why - I think I will try the fuel addative first.

Cheers,
Evan
