On another thread John Ohnemus mentioned that he has a $3500 3 watt TV transmitter on board his heli for WGEM's live feed system. This is the kind of unit/licence that would allow video to be used to help navigate and to position a still camera for commercial pictures as well. The amateur radio equiptment can be used only for hobby use where there is no money changing hands.

I would assume that John does not need to be the licence holder himself and that the license is under WGEM. How difficult would it be for a small entity like a 1 or 2 man business to obtain this kind of license?

Commercial High Power Video Transmitter

Greetings

I do not know exactly what commercial system John is using. I should be a FCC Part 90 Network TV broadcast transmitter on a special frequency that all TV stations have for remote broadcasting. The TV station holds the license and is responsible for it’s proper usage by its employees. In most cases in crowded areas the TV stations are required to use a frequency coordinator to prevent TV stations from interfering with each other since there are limited frequencies available.

For RC aerial photography there is another way to go, using a low power FCC Part 15 system that does not require a license and can be used for commercial usage or a high power FCC Part 90 system that requires you to be a business, law enforcement, or a utility. If you would like to see what a high power FCC Part 90 system looks like for RC helicopters here is a link.

This system requires you to apply for a FCC site license, which is much like a business radio band type of license. It cost about $25.00 to $100.00 and is good for one year, you can list your state as your operating area.
