Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > DRIFT? with a 401 on a fury

I am noticing a problem with the last 2 tanks of fuel, didn't notice it on the first 3. The tail moves in the left direction. I have a raptor and configured it the same way as my fury. Same everything with the same 9253 servo. NO binding, no subtrim, mixing and a difference with travel. What I read with earlier posts is to set trim and to turn in on and off to normal and hh mode 3 times fast. This does not work. What else could it be.

Drift in 401

If you are turning the reciever on with the gyro in HH and letting the gyro intilize then something is changing the gyro netural. Does this happen in HH or normal or both?

I have the same problem. I'm not quite sure what the problem is, but I have been working on it. I am trying the 601 in its place to see if this is intrinsic to the 401, or the Fury, or some weird combination. I have tried different wheel diameters and tail gear combinations. It comes and goes.

I will be working on this on my end. Let me know if you find some problem on your end.

metal ma I don't know exactly what you mean. I start in in hh mode and the light is steady like my raptor.

Wingtip- My raptor blinks when it starts up and it is fine, then it turns to a stady light. Both do it. Maybe the gyro is bad, si If there is no rain tomarrow I will check the fury with a proven gyro or use it in a proven heli and setup.

Mine drifts too.... 401

Yes a really badly setup 401 can drift, but to be honest, you can totally botch a 401 install and chances are it will work well anyway. That is the reason we like the gyro - it is stable and reliable (most of the time).

But, alas, mine does the same thing. In fact, mine will even drift INTO the direction of the wind. I can fly rate, so I dont fret much now, and here is why.

Mine was crashed once bad enough to put a crack in the plastic case. Now, it did not cause a problem untill a year later. So, I need to send it in for a new case and hopefully a full work-over.

I was at a fun fly, and EVERYONE had an opinion why it drifted, and none of the suggestions worked. (there were even some notable individuals that gave some advice).

The moral of this story: sometimes the damn gyro is not working OK, and your setup IS OK.

Ok, I have narrowed your possible problem down to a couple things.
(The assumption is made that since you used this in a different heli, the unit and servo work properly and that you know how to set it up.)

1. Disconnect the tail control rod at the servo. The whole setup should move with very little finger pressure. If you have ANY sticking in the system, squeeze the links with pliers to make the whole system "kissy smooth."

2. Remove your tail blade holders and check the proper installation of the thrust bearings. Be sure that the inner bearing is the larger diameter, and that the outer bearing is the tight one on the stud.

My guess is that you have a bearing installed backward, but a sticky control system will do it too.

I found a bad bearing (dimpled from a crash) in the tail blade holder in mine. It drove me crazy for a while.

Now having said all of that, the 401 WILL sometimes drift ever so slightly sometimes if left in a hover with no tail input for a minute or so.

I don't think its that. It seems to be fine. I am sure I did not put the thrust bearings in wrong.

Well its not the gyro since the gyro worked fine on my raptor. It has to be in the heli somewhere. I will recheck the trust bearings. The heli still drifts with the other proven to work gyro. It is just a little drift, but it still bothers me.

My 401 worked great on my Fury until I crashed. I remounted the gyro in the same place with a different tape and it had very little foam, it was pretty much just thick double sided tape. The heli would drift. It would initialize fine and did not drift on the ground until I started the motor. I finally had a theory that it was vibration related. I pulled it off and remounted it with foam tape. It is now drift free.

Later, Guy

Maybe I should try different tape then. 60's do have a lot more vibration.
