Howdy...

Just got my first PCM, and I've read alot about setting all channels except throttle to normal, or 'hold-last-position'.... I'm wondering if this is really better than setting all channels to 'neutral'....

For example. Let's assume that you have a fairly well set up heli, and that it will hover hands-off for a few seconds, as it should...

If you are flying around, and you get a tiny glitch (say, a really small 1/4 second glitch), then normal mode would be better, and you might not even notce it (maybe a bad thing)

If you set it to 'neutral' rather than 'normal (or hold)', then a small glitch would hold the last 'orientation' of the heli, not the last servo position. If you are hovering, you will keep hovering (of course), if you are transitioning to FF, you would maintain the FF, rather than maintaining the transitioning position, which would result in a forward flip as heli continued to think you were holding the stick forward.

If you were holding a little left stick to get into a left drift, the heli would continue to float left slowly, rather than continuing to roll left which would eventually leave the heli falling knife-edge to the ground...

As I think about it, maybe what I wish is that a 1 second or less hit would keep the servos as they were, and a more catastrophic 1 second or more hit (like the transmitter running out of battery or range) would be better if the servos went to neutral (again, except the throttle)...

There's probably and expert out there who has given this tons of thought and has all the answers, but I'd love to hear from ALL of you on this issue... Sorry if I'm over-analyzing...

Thanks.... Can't wait to read your responses...

I crashed due to a crystal falling out and after repairing the major damage I switched from all servos in hold to a throttle to idle, all others hold position. I have read and thought about a lot of arguments for each position. There are a ton of "what if's" on either side of the argument and I would bet there are a similar amount of each. The only thing I am a firm believer in now is the throttle to idle. If something catastrophic has happened (crystal fell out) then at least you hit at an idle. If you are experiencing some sort of mechanical noise the motor will drop to idle and a lot of the time that will be enough to change the noise and release the radio. I have had that happen to me. Plus it can give you an indication that you are having a problem.
