Curious to find out how many of you fly at an actual designated Heli-Field versus sharing a field with airplanes.

Our club is having issues with possible loss of a field and obtaining a new one.

Our old field is on school property and was only used one day a week.

For those with an designated Heli-Field, how did it come to pass?

Is your field on public or private land?

How many club members do you have?

What obsticles were overcome in obtaining your field?

Thanks,

Ruff

Is this the same field where the phoenix funfly used to be held?

No it's not. This was our weekly field, not where the FF was held.

Our field is a heli only field, it's not suitable for planks anyway
It is owned by the County Forest Preserve and they maintain it, so in reality it is Not Our Field anyone can use it. We provide the yearly insurance (Through the AMA). The Forest Preserve requires a permit to fly there. They have to see and verify a valid AMA membership before they issue the permit (covers their butt for insurance??)
They maintain the site, mow the grass, service a port-a-potty, ect.
Our club has about 50 members and the club does not require a member to purchase a permit. IF they do not fly at the field they don't need a permit. If a club member flies at the field he/she must have a permit
We can apply for a speical use permit for exclusive use of the field. IE: our annual fun fly. We have to meet all their requirements and pay the fees for this permit.
We try to make sure that the pits are cleaned up and that we leave it in better shape than when we arrive.

We lost our heli only field in Maryland aboutr six years ago. I spent days writing letters, putting up flyers, lobbying Government officials, lobbying AMA (that was a total waste of time) and going door to door to farmers for almost two years.

Just when I thought I was close to getting someplace with the local government, this guy drives up to me on an ATV while I was flying at my local bootleg gravel pit. When I told him we had a small club and were trying to rent some property, he said he had some to rent to us, so off to his house where he actually had a 17 acre field, which our club has since rented for the past 4 years.

Keep trying, don't give up, but the bottum line is it's who you know. I'm confident now if we lost the field I could find another in short time since I know so many more large property owners now.
