Got Jet Fuel? Turbine Helicopters > HP5 Bell230 finally flying !!

heliVoYVeteran - Location: NJ -

Ok,

we are ready for flight again ! this time the pipes are sending the exhaust/heat sideways away from the blades. Since in the last 3 months I have been unable to get a uper cowl for the bell 230, i just temporarily set up my old cowling with the new pipe cut out locations. I also added 3 layers of heat blanket in some spots, and now with the way the canopy is cut out, i definately have more cooling air flow inside the fuselage. Tomorrow (Saturday) the 230 flies again ..... got the camcorder ready for some video .....

Well,

today was awesome !! (besides the 25mph+ wind gusting) The bell230 flew flawlesly !! The blades were cool to the tutch, and the bottom of the fuselage was not even the slightest bit warm even though the pipe glowed RED HOT on startup (this is because the exhaust gets deflected almost 90 degreez upwards 1/2' behind the turbine exhaust .. At almost 40 LBS, i can say the bell230 flies a lot diferently than the Jetcopter SX I was used to ! had to be on the sticks constantly, but it was no problem ... The 230 is very fast in forward flight, and just wants to keep moving, it has some very noticeable momentum !! makes my 3d glo helicopters almost feel like feathers ..

I only had one problem (kind of) today ... I had the head running at 1400 RPM (96000 on turbine) with no load on the ground, as i punched in full pitch on the head for a steep climbout, i heard the HP5 load up, and probably dropped down to around 75000rpm on the turbine from load alone. Shortyl after, the turbine dropped to a lower RPM and stayed there for a while, before regaining its set 96000 again ... WHat i think happened is that after loading the turbine up, the ECU tried to compensate for the RPM drop, and kept dumping more and more fuel in, trying to force the turbine to ramp back up to the 96000 the throtle was set to (HP5 runs on a set throttle position with no throttle curve) ... My max tem durring the overload reached 970c !!!! now i know that there is a limit to the available power from the turbine, as i never realized this on the lighter Jetcopter, which was mildly aerobatic ....

Anyway, im off to bed for now, but in the morning, i will convert the video to MPEG, and post it on my server (i will post the link here) I have at least 5 min of good footage ....

970C!!! Holy meltdown Batman. That Jakadofski would have shut you down way before then. There must be significant differences in the computer programming to allow that temp.

My 44lb Lama is right on the weight limit for the PJW-R and there is no question of punching full pitch, its definitely a question of energy management when flying to prevent the engine shutting itself down.

Peter, i definately did not manage my power on that one take off i will post the video in a few minutes, and you will see what happened ... I went from 0 to 12 degrees pitch in less than a second and thats on a 35+ pound helicopter .. you can actually hear the turbine loading up, and soon after you can hear and see the helicopter drop in rpm ... the software does not shut down in an overtemp, but kind of goes into a failsafe type setting .. it was enough for me to land safely. as i set the heli down, the turbine spooled back up to its peak rpm .. i shut down at that point and checked everything out ...all was ok, and the bottom pf my fuselage shockingly was still cold to the toutch !! and there is only a 1" clearence between the fuse and the bottom of the pipe ... I learned a good lesone here, the power is not unlimited in the HP5 (as the jetcopter had me thinking ) ..... over all i am VERY happy with how the software handled my abusive controll inputs .... Im also thankfull for Optikaman always being there to tell me "slow down" "dont do that" or "take it easy" because "Nothing is ever fast enough !!!"

video coming in a few min ..

40 lbs!!!!! my lord! my 7 foot bk-117 weighs 28 pounds with fuel fully loaded!
runs 587 degrees /90 degree day and youre right voytech, the HP-5 is not intended for ships that heavy/not enough power.
Peter, I too would have thought the jetronic would have called time out long before that temp.bad e.c.u.?

(your last question, yes those are graupner fittings/festo.)

see you all in about 2 weeks. Our tour/service trip to Germany-Graupner-Scalcopter/Austria-Jakadofsky begins.

Ok, as promised, heres the video !! !

by the way, video #3 is where i managed to overload/overheat the HP5 .... at first this apeared to be a failsafe condition ,,, but data pulled off of the GSU proved it was high temp issue ... I have to remember this is not a jet, or a 3d heli, and fly it more scale like (still enough to make tha pasangers puke though I Love this helicopter (now that its finally flying !! )!! the SB-90 and the EC-135 should be up and flying quick, as they are kits that were actually designed around the HP5, and i will not have to concoct my own pipe for ... no experimentation, just build and fly ....

Movie 1

Movie 2

Movie 3

and here is Alan Delena's H500 (also HP5 powered ) doing some spool up testing ...

also heres a vid i made of my raptor 50, and some onboard vid from the 50 ....

correction ! i just reweighed my bell230 (dry, no fuel) and dry it comes out to around 27.5 lbs .... it holds around 110-120 oz of fuel on board so figure with fuel it probably ends up around 35 lbs (not 40 ) , thats still heavy ....

by the way Sandy, that heat blanked you posted the link to is awesome ... while i got the HP5 to almost 1000c, the heat blanket kept the bottom of the fuselage completely cold ! not even slightly warm ! (i had use 3 layers of blanket on fuse floor, and 1 wrapped directly around the pipe ... thanx ...
