I think you may be mistaken about the matal tail case for the Predator.
The stock plastic gearbox is split vertically instead of horizontally, has large bearings supporting both shafts and uses helical metal gears. Consequently this well designed unit has proven to be bulletproof under even the most strenous usage, there is no reason to add weight to the back and to offer a very expensive machined unit.
On the other hand, you may have confused the "rumor" of the new tail rotor gearbox with the another inexpensive plastic unit that is forthcoming later this year It will give one the option of mounting the vertical fin on the opposite side of the boom.
