Blades, Night Flying and Painting > What is glow wire, and bright LEDs

What is glow wire? It looks cool, how does it work? It requires some sort of high frequency driver, but what is the actual wire?

Anybody tried using super bright LEDs for any night flying applications? Something like a sapphire crystal lamp at intensities like 2000+ mcd? Maybe put a dispersion gradient in front of it so you didn't laser beam your eyeball...

Thanks, John Cadwell

It will answer your questions. I'm sure there are additional vendors others will recommend, but I recently bought some goodies from them and am very happy with my purchase.

I used the super bright LED but on a planker at last years night fly at my club. They were GREAT. I put a combination on each wing tip so I had visibility fore, aft, horizontal, front, and rear. then added some to reflect off the vert stab, and on the horiz stab as well. It looked great in the air. I made the rear facing lights all blue so you really had some good orientation when the thing made the down wind leg... I used a little CA to di-fuse the LED direction so I would not laser my own eyes when flying. i think the light rope and xylem tubes work best on helis.

Did my first night flying tonight, my friend used glowire from www.glowire.com .............great stuff....they make drivers specifcally for helis (they just encapsulate components cause of the vibration i guess).. it was a radical night...we were out flying for like 6 hours today/tonight. Super visibility. I try to get some pics up next weekend.

I just looked at the coolwire site, looks like simiair technology as glowire. I don't know how important it is to u, but the glowire comes like......a finished product. The wires plug into the inverters and u can flip a switch to make them solid or blink (which i personally didn't like to much). My friend had several lengths he wanted and they custom made them (read on the glowire site about how to solder and seal them-i'll let the pro's do it on my $3k heli) @ no extra charge i think. We got the drivers at 4k for more intnsitey......could see great. I think the "glowire" more expensive but seemed a little better for our application. Ford/chevy...no right or wrong....just my 2 cents. Enjoy !

what i meant by "didn't like too much" was the blinking while flying.....the inverter itself seemed topnotch...just to clear that up, i just reread it after i posted ttfn

Glowire - Coolwire - Gwire - Same Same

This is all the same wire. Just different people selling. The biggest manufacturer is ELAM in Isreal. The drivers are manufactured by several differcent people. Most of what I have dealt with is great stuff. All put together in cases. Some you can set to blink, some not. Depends on the driver, you can get a driver to do most anything. The difference between the 2.3 mm wire, the 3.2 mm wire and the "Angle hair" wire is the thickness of the colored coating. The center is all the same, (except for the flat wire).
So far the "Angel Hair" only comes in Aqua, and real thin.
Just my 2 cents worth (after selling this stuff for a few years).
