I was thinking of ways to make my raptor 60 lighter without spending a fortune. Has anyone tried making their own frames from G-10 material? If so, where did you purchase the material and what did you cut it with? Also what thickness did you use? I have seen tail fins hand cut from this material with great success.

Any information would be great
Thanks

by the time you scan the frames, convert the image to a CNC program and cut the material on a CNC mill, you will wish you would have simply bougt the carbon set from MrCarbon or QuickUK or NHP

You could conveivably cut them by hand using a diamond cutter slitting disk etc, but you'll want to have good breathing protection, dust control and I'm not sure you'd be able to match the pattern too well, resulting in tweaks.

i have made my own G10 frames for my Logo 20 electric (50 sized). G10 is cheap and easy to work with. it cuts like butter on my little scroll saw. i used a mill for cutting out holes for servos and so on. if you don't have a mill, cutting those holes will be a little tricky and tedious. however, G10 is not difficult to mill. you will need to wear a dust mask rated for fiberglass particles, and it will wear out your end mills quickly, but it's not too bad. i used 1/16 thick G10 from mcmaster carr:

oh yeah, you dont' need a CNC mill to do the work. a regular manually operated mill is fine. at least draw up a diagram with measurements to work off of though. to mill the frames, i screwed two plates of G10 to a piece of plywood, then clamped the plywood to the mill table. this will get you two identical frames, one for each side. you can cut slightly into the plywood while making your cuts so that you cut all the way through the G10.

Yeah, you might just bolt the original frames to the G-10 plates and use them as a guide, and a manual mill will work fine too.

I had a guy make me some ergo frames out of heavy duty G-10, they were nice. He did the scan and mill method. 4 frames back then cost me $140

Still, once you look at all the time spent, I'd still suggest just buying the carbon set. For the 4pc R60 set I think it is $90?

G-10

Thanks for all the info. I think I will go ahead and give it a try.

I made a complete frameset for my Hawk. See my other posts for an explanation of my mill setup, but I believe you could do the same with a Dremel drill press or shaper table. I bought a 2x4 foot sheet of g10 from our local plastics supply place for 70 bucks- enough to build 40 frames!

This stuff looks very good dyed in any colr you want using standard RIT dye. I'm now using carbon for a lot of the stuff I do, but G-10 is great material. Just be sure to wear a good dust mask!
