Main Discussion > Radio interference from power lines??

There's a field near where I live that would be a perfect place to fly... but the only thing is that there are power lines that run somewhat close to the field. Think it would be safe to fly there or would I be asking for trouble? How far is far enough from power lines for this to not be an issue?

Except for hitting them I don't think there should be any concern. The Corona from the insulators does put out broad spectrum noise but mostly in kHz range.

don't worry about the lines, I fly at home and fly over or near the lines all the time, I have a JR PCM radio and never had a problem. but make sure you have permission to fly their, AMA will not cover you if you do not have permission to fly on or over it.

should be ok, no prob unless it starts to arc , don't stand under it with the antennae point straight up either . If you know what I mean .. have fun..

You guys are right, no problems, unless there is a problem with some of the cables or insulators. At our field we had a rash of problems with airplanes coming in to land across the power lines (still a safe ways off though). The pilots would experience from "little hits" to flat out roll in and crashes! Many people made comments about staying away from "just over there" and point to the area where the problems were encountered and most just short circuited the area on landing approaches.
Finally we went to the area just under one section of power line at the pole with an analyser and viola! there was some activity on the scanner!
We called the local power company and they did find a couple of bad insolators that were repaired and we have been glitch free ever since.

So I would show a little caution flying in close to power lines in a new "untried" area. Chances are you are totally safe, but I would "test" it out the best you could first if the lines have some age on them.

David,
I would not imagine that the high tension lines you refer to have any problems at all. The power companies fly these lines regularly looking for problems and are very proactive in keeping these lines in top shape. Our field is pretty far out and the lines had been there for a good while. As the power company told us, the insolators and other componants get old and break down. The repairs were normal maintanance that had been overlooked and cost us nothing.
Like I said, when scoping out a new area, one should not have a problem, but if you are near lines that could be older or overlooked, go out and range check around the base of the lines, it could save you some trouble!
