It was 7pm yesterday night and an 85 year old heli flyer was still practicing nose in hover about 50 feet high. He was doing good past the sideway hover towards nose in but when he went for the nose in hover all hell broke lose. The helicopter started to wiggle sideways then nose dived towards me and the old man. I jumped behind the work bench and the heli crashed on the opposite side only 2 feet from where he and I were standing. Wheew! that will be the last I watch anybody practice nose in hover.

Wow! I always imagined that the safest place to be was behind the pilot. Although you have to admire an 85 year old giving it a go.

Ouch!! Glad you did not get hit by his heli. I always tend to keep my distance when someone is practicing a new manuever.

Sounds like he didnt have a bail-out plan. When doing nose in you need to be ready for the 180degree turn back to tail in.

I'll second the value of a '180 to tail-in bail-out' plan! Saved me a number of times (and scared the sh*t out of my camera man....) when I was trying to learn nose-in

Nose in Hover

Hi Folks,

Be very very carefull when learn nose in hovering. I learn nose in hovered within my 3 weeks of learning experence with my 30 size kyshow concept SRT with Roto trainer pod on was chasing me. I run and laid down flat with my face on the ground while my Heli flew passed over my head, if I did not laid down it would chopped my head off, very lucky I did not get hurt also my heli was not damaged either, it landed at about 10 feet behind me perfectly. Scared me to dead so I quit (This is happen in mid summer back in 1996) Now in my local have more heli flyers, so I am back again. Since I got rit of my 30 size heli, I bought a 60 size Skyfox in December, 2002 and start all over again. In the past two months I CRASHED my Skyfox at hi-speed
of turning nose in at about 100 feet high and lost control, I try to flipped180 degree to get tail in and when down sideway it is totally lost.
What I save is the engine, turn pipe, and electronics. Well I am not give up yet, any one can do it. Why could I? I bought an other Skyfox and a 50 Raptor so at this time I will use my raptor to be my trainer instead of the Skyfox until I do better. My friend Randy, keeps telling me go get a cheap 30 size heli for your training if you crash it wouldn't be too expensive to repair, well that is true. I get ready to learn more nose in tomorrow with my Rappy 50. Always, stay alert it doesn't matter what you do your life is always first, if you think you lost control and will be danger to life please shot it down before too late. I rather lost my danm Heli than I or some one near me can get hurt.
Best regard,

Charly

Lots of G2 times and get comfortable with the control then try the real thing, you'll know how to react much better.
