I recently bought 2 old heli's. The engines are both covered in a baked on oily substance, is there anything to soak them in to soften and remove this oily residue.

Engines?

Yes, there is a thread here somewhere but I don't know how to link to it. Anyway, what I have done sucessfully several times is to "cook" the parts (after disassembly) in a crock pot with uncut automotive anti-freeze. The crock pot is electric and used to cook food slowly over-nite.
**NOTE** **NOTE**
NEVER Use the pot for food or ANY human consumption after using it with anti-freeze, it WILL be contaminated. As well, only do this in a WELL ventalated area, the fumes may also be toxic.

Some of the caked on stuff may require a bit of scrubbing with a nylon type brush. This method will clean the parts to a "like new" condition without any harm to the parts.
I have left mufflers in the pot up to a week with great results.

Tha above method works great,so does oven cleaner.I have found the cheaper the better, assume they use more toxins.Do not use it indoors, very nasty.Jason Kalbfleisch

Cleaning?

Although I have not tried oven cleaner I have heard reports that it damages the finnish on some aluminum surfaces, it makes them appear dull.
After all, oven cleaner uses caustic chemicals to do it's work.
The anti-freeze is designed to be used with aluminum parts; I.E. your automobile cooling system, it's mostly if not all aluminum and the anti-freeze is in there through thousands of heat cool cycles and lasts for years.

Z Best engine cleaner works pretty well on the burnt brown stuff. I think it's the same stuff as paint remover. Oven cleaner discolors the aluminum (been there, done that).

You can get Chevron perfect engine cleaner from Tower Hobbies. Works great and does not damage o-rings. I just used it to resurect 2 old plank engines.

If the engines are to be soaked or cleaned in oven cleaner or other potentialy damaging chemicals they should be take apart or the rubber, plastic and silicone parts removed at the very least.

The best way that I have found to clean engines safely and without damage before re-assembly is to boil them in a pot of water that contains "Cascade" or some other brand of automatic dish water detergent. A couple of tablespoons in enough water to cover the parts is a great plenty.Just don't include any rubber, plastic or silicone parts! How long you boil the parts depends on how much crud is on the engine. You then can use a "Scotch Brite" type pad or even a tooth brush works well to scrub the nooks and crannies.
This method works very well and does not take long at all to produce new looking parts! Just make sure to rinse and OIL the parts (especially steel) immediately after removing from the pot. The parts will rust very rapidly and need a light oil film on them to prevent this!
The "Cascade" method removes the oils and crap even from the pores of the metal, it is that effective!

Hope this helps!!
