It just seems that $50 for landing gear is quite steep. I was just curious if there was a sit that shows you how to make one that works well.

$50.00 landing gear???

$50.00 landing gear - What landing gear is that ? The two L/G struts for my Hawk only cost $9.95 and the two skids are another $9.95.

I meant the rotopod traning landing gear.

Did you need to use one while learning to hover?

When I was learning, I made training gear out of 1/4 inch dowels (4 of them) setup in a tic-tac-toe pattern with wiffle balls on the end of each dowel. You absolutely cannot tilt over the chopper if you stay a foot or less off the ground (which is where you need to learn). You can get the dowels at any hardware store. They normally come in three foot lengths.
The wiffle balls can be purchased at most any large department store for about a buck a piece. The dowels are less that a dollar each.

Right now I am using 2 1/4" dowels, but they are mounted straight out the sides of my heli, one at the front of the LG and one at the back. I then have a hulla-hoop attached to these. It works great. It gives you stability in all directions, as well as keeps the heli up on the snow.

Try a hoola hoop. 30 inch mount 3/8 inch dowel rods thru it. Works good!!

Rotopod landing gear...

I went ahead and splurged and got the Rotopod 60 landing gear for my new Raptor 50. It is absolutely awesome and I am very happy I got it!! The difference between the 30 size and the 60 size Rotopod is only what the rods are made of. The 30 size has wooden rods while the 60 size uses carbon fiber. If you do decide to go with the Rotopod, go ahead and spend the extra $10 and get the 60 size, even if you have a 30 size heli. I got mine my 60 size Rotopod from Heliproz for $55.

A good thing about the Rotopod is when you might not have enough throttle and hit the ground a little hard, it just springs the heli back up about a foot of the ground, with no damage to the heli. I have been very happy with it as I have been learning. I think it was money very well spent.

On the other hand, for the money, you can't beat the the homemade versions. They work fine and if you break a wooden rod, you can replace it cheaply at your Home Depot. Either way will have you up and flying and learning which is the most important thing. Just get something, it will save your heli and your wallet in just the first flight.

Good luck and happy flying,

Brooks

hula hoop

Go to my gallery (winger) and look at the GMP cobra with the hoop. I think you'll like it.
