Main Discussion > CSM 400 HH gyro is makeing me NUTS!!!!!!!!!

Someone help. This gyro is about to drive me NUTS! It is having an issue that I can not figure out. It has an inermiten "twitch" that will NOT go away. And it drifts like crazy in HH mode, as well as being VERY sensitive to power changes in non HH mode. The twitch exists in both modes. This thing will not hold the tail worth a crap in either mode. I have adjusted the gain in both modes, both ways, added some took some away. No dibs. So who knows about this thing? I was thinking that perhaps the thick foam tape that came with the thing was making it bobble arround to much and was throwing the thing off. But who knows! The gyro is in a Raptor 30 and is being controlled by a JR 8417 servo. And it has less than 20 flights on everything. Any ideas?

Had a similar problem. Needed to go back to the basics and checked the tail drive, rotor etc. Discovered that when it was loose it greatly affected the performance. Also the tail bellcrank and pushrod gave it problems. I rebuilt everything and converted to a carbon fiber pushrod with tail mounted servo and then reprogrammed everything and problems went away. Since then no issues with the 400 or 540 I own. Hope this helps. Also there was a great thread on rconline last year that gave great setup tips for these gyros.

Thanks for the response. But I must ask. When what was loose? Just wondering.

You must have something set up wrong. I have one on my Ergo 46 and it works great. I would start from scratch and check everything. They are a good gyro. I know a couple of guys that have them and they work great. When in non HH mode you have to put in some Revolution mix to keep it stable for power changes. But when in HH mode it (SHOULD) lock the tail.

CSM Gyro's

I have the same problem with a CSM 540 on a Raptor 30 with a Futaba S9450 servo and the NHP carbon pushrod upgrade.

I have been playing with it for some time and the best I can get out of it is a reasonable stable normal mode, with a fair amout of drift and a very twichy HH mode.

As a result of this, I have done 2 things, first, I always fly in normal mode, and second I have ordered 3 GY401's to go on my Raptor 30, Sceadu 50 and Raptor 60 V2.

CSM Gyro's and me just aren't the best of friends !!!

csm's

I haven't seen a good csm out there yet, i've heard of guys getting them to lock in, but still havent seen it. I have 2 friends with stretched raptors and they both have the csm 540 and cannot get it to lock in. I was wondering what kind of stuff the interface has to help it lock in.

All I can say is after so many gallons of messing with it, it's worth it to just go with a futaba gyro. Right out of the box, even without a digital servo my gy 502 has been perfect.

I fly 6 machines with 540s and no problem with any of them. They all lock solid and the only time I get any drift at all is when there is a big change in temprature, and then it is very minor. Like if I bring them out of my truck where they have been warm into the cool air.

All I do with the interface is reset them to the factory defaults and set them up and fly. I just set up a 400 for a friend and I went through the setup and it was holding great too.

I was having a simular probem with a Jr 410 gyr after moving it to the boom. Upon close inspection I found that when I installed tie rapes near a connector (electrical) it had pulled the connector apart . Viberation from the Raptor in flight would cause it to connect and disconnect.. So check your electrical connections. I use dental floss to tied the connectors together.
Hope this helps.

If my CSM400 can work in my vibrating POS Century Falcon it should work in anything else. I have found that they need long servo arms, My push rod is attached at 20mm from the center, and a friction free pushrod. If your using the stock wire..... good luck. I have mine mounted in the cabin front on the original thick tape. My servo is the Airtronics 94258 coreless. Its got lots of torque and is pretty fast. It holds great and after setting it up is basically thought free and doesn't really drift that much.

Hope this helps,
Mike

hi,
I had similar problem, but mine was that CSM 400 does not like 5 cell pack , when I switched to 4 cell pack it was good.

I'm running a 5cell Nickel Metal Hydride pack on mine with no problems. I've been flying this pack since august. Never a glitch, hiccup, or whatever.

hello,

I have a CSM 400 working on a Hitec HS 925 servo. It's rock solid,

Now I use a long arm but even with a medium one it was perfect.
Even when I was using the genuine pushrods it was perfect.

there's a setup page on RonLund.com for the gyro and if you set it up just like that you'll love it

Please cancel my clearance, I have the field in sight.

Glitches

Hi ,
Im new here and to RC helis, i also have a rapto 30 with a CSM 400, which is paired with 8417. I hav ejust upgraded to the CSM 400 and am also experiencing the same problem. I have been speaking to one of the experienced guys at my flying field and he tells me that its because i am running on a ppm RX. He said change to a PCM and it will remove the "glitches"

Im going to change my RX as soon as i get back from holiday in a week.

Sorry for the delay in replying all. I am on one of those terrible work rotations. The Tail blade holders became loose with a minor tail strike. Agree that with the tail push rod wire on the Falcon the gyro would not lock on. Therefore the carbon pushrod and tail boom mounted servo. By the way I am running the JR 4735. Bob Johnston also has a CSM gyro help page on his web site. www.bobj.co.uk/CSM/csm.htm I hope this helps. I flew a Falcon 50 and a Kalt Baron S today with a 400 and 540 respectively both with JR 4735s and all held well.
