RCHELIFANATIC Senior Heliman Location: TEXAS
| I have been flying for a little more than a week. I was to the point where I had it trimmed, gyro was working great, and I was trying to set the limit on the gyro. I set it to the smallest throw and it still binded. I flew and HH would not work for crap so I set it back and thought leave it alone,"don't fix what isn't broken".
So I am messing around taking off, landing, hovering around all tail in.In that week I had about 20 or more flights only fill tank half way it leaks after that. Got bored after first gallon was almost gone so I was flaring my blades in a 1ft slow forward hover causing leaves to go through the blades and chopping them up,"I now realize looking back that was dumb" then even that was not enough and so I was chasing my dog around the yard at 10ft altatude and 5ft behind, would rather crash then hurt him but you should have seen him, he thought it was the spirit of killed chickens seeking revenge. He loves my parents chickens.
The dog ran away and so I just hovered down to 1ft and a bug landed on my shoulder and I just looked down and wiped off, then I looked up and the heli was slowly heading towards a hurricane fence, having the visualization of it mangled and hanging from the fence screaming , I pulled back and lifted, and it just threw stuff everywhere , and I hit throttle hold fast and thank god because it hit the battery about 10feet and could not kill the engine with radio, but it was at idle so just pulled fuel line.
I am not really sure what happened, it didn't hit the fence, I know the boom was hit a couple times with the blades bending it up and cracking the blades. I remember back before first flight that day and I remember seeing my blades not completely level like I should have tightened them, but it didn't send up a flag and I didn't think that it was bad enough to cause a boom strike. I had them pretty tight 15 flights previous and they would not fall when shaken once holding sideways.
I didn't test the blade tightness that day though. I had training gear on but the heli broke through the zip ties during the boom strike. I would like to hear any idea you think might have happened, so I can learn something from this besides don't act like a jack ass and chase your dog or try to get anything to go through your blades.
Do you think it was the binding tail rotor linkage, the tail gear box was thrown about 25 feet. Was it just a boom strike from pulling back.
I had previously tested 15 flights earlier the limit of the cyclic on the ground by spooling up and taking disk to all its limits and all was fine.
Do blades tend to loosen?
Thanks fo any of your ideas of what might have happened.
