Check out my new fin! I've been playing with a new CNC router and took the stock fin as a pattern, removed the XL and inserted the Fury Logo.

As soon as I get some more bits, I'll cut some out. Cutting G-10 will go thru a bit in no time!

Here's another design, but I don't like it as much as the first.

If you have access to a scanner, scan your vertical fin, and give me an example of the logo you want. Or use any kind of paint program to design one. The file has to be saved as a bmp file. I use a program to convert the bmp file into a dxf vector program, clean it up in AutoCAD, and then export it to my HPGL controller for the CNC router.

Mike, I'm interested in at least 1 small "Fury" too at Birmingham. I hope you've got the time between then and now to make them. Looks like you've got a good thing there!

Later!,

Gary, sorry about the delayed reply. The machine that I'm using isn'home built, its a full scall Digital Tool 4-axis router (although I'm only using the x,y,and z axis) with a 72" by 48" by 8' cutting area. I'm using the HPGL controller going from an AutoCAD design to the router. The software you use is dependant on the machine you have, to some extent. Most of the machines out there communicate via the serial port - this one communicates via three parallel ports! It will cut up to 150" per minute, assuming that the bit and material can handle it.

For all, I think I may have the bit/G10 issue figured out, I hope to have enough fin by B'ham. Those who have asked on this list will have first dibs.

Anyone else who would like a fin (not of Fury design) email me and we'll work out the drawing exchange.

These are the kind of CNC's I have access to at work.

I wish I had the time to use them for routing fins or nice metal upgrade parts.

Metal CNC

PCB material CNC for G-10, Teflon, Ceramic and Carbon Graphite. The ones we have are similar but much larger. Their website just didn't have a picture of it.

For all that are going to B'ham fun fly - I should have at least 25 of the fins available. If anyone else wants one and is not going to be at the funfly, drop me an email and we'll work out the details. Here's a picture of my type of router, although my table isn't as nice.

It's nothing as nice as what ColeopTer has to work with tho.....

Where can I get G-10 or or other carbon plate?

I would like to get hold of a small amount of this G-10 stuff for some supports. Granted, a cnc router would be nice to have to cut it.... But where can I get it?

Tom,

I've purchased G10 from http://www.mcmaster.com/ in the past. They stock different colors and thicknesses. A 12" x 12" sheet of .062" black G-10/F4 Garolite is $5.80. Just type G10 in the search. 12" x 12" is the smallest they sell I believe.

Nathan,

Pulled from McMaster's site - G-10 is a "continuous-woven glass fabric laminated with an epoxy resin".

McMaster's site also has a really nice PDF spec file on G-10. Here's a section of it:

Colored Sheets (85345K):
Common applications for this material include bushings, gears, bearings, pulleys, spacers, gaskets, wear blocks, and terminal boards.
Meet the following standard: UL94V-0 for flammability and Mil l 24768/27.
Tensile Strength: 50,000 psi
Impact Strength: 12 ft.-lbs./in.
Dielectric Strength: 550 V/mil
Durometer: Rockwell M: 111
Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: 0.9×10 -5 in./in./°F
Weather Resistance: Material is not weather resistant.
Processing: Machinability: Can be easily machined, sawed, drilled, and tapped.
Welding: Not recommended.
Scratch Resistance: Material has excellent scratch resistance.
Chemical Resistance: Unaffected by most organic solvents, resistant to dilute solutions of most acids, and not recommended for use in alkaline solutions.

Tom - what size G10 do you need for the supports you want to build? If they are small pieces, I have some scrap pieces I can send you - drop me an email.

For those of you who went to the B'ham funfly, and didn't get a vertical fin - sorry I ran out, I brought 30 with me and they went fast. I'm cutting another batch this weekend, drop me an email if you want one. $10 each plus $4 shipping.
