Anybody having fun with this bug,My main pc went down last night ,I was only able to stay connected to the internet for 49 seconds at a time.Microsoft says they have a free patch on there site to fix the problem, kind of hard to download anything in 49 seconds.I'm kindof affraid to run my brand spankin laptop, but first thing I did was to download that fix,and what got me was there was a sales pitch for an anti virus connected right into the patch download. Can you see me shaking my head right now.Them boys aint right. This virus only affects windows 2000 and xp by what I can tell. They suggest to download there patch imediatly. Heliman 100

Read first

Read the how to files as you are required to turn off the system restore feature or the worm keeps reappearing. It IS a PITA to get rid of if you are using dial up.

Hi,

it was easy to remove for me, I just needed 3 hours to find out the problem

Anyway, it shut down my PC after a few seconds or minutes so I had 20 reboots to figure out, first I thought there was something wrong with my windows.

Tips:

It won't shut down your computer if you don't have connection to the internet. So:

1. pull the plug (of your internet connection!)
2. open task manager(ctrl-alt-del we call this the monkey grip in German), process window -> find msblast.exe and end this task.
3. open the search function and search for msblast and delete it
4. go to start-execute and enter regedit, in the editor search for msblast and delete the entries you find.
5. congrats, the virus is gone but it will come back soon if you connect to the internet.

If you have a computer magazine laying around look if it has a firewall on the cd... or download zonealarm it's free just try to download it before the virus comes again. It doesn't spread by email but via e security hole it will come back even if you don't surf or read emails, it's a danger that dsl and cable have... you're always online and always under attack!

Install the firewall and go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install all the updates (almost 50MB in my case).

I suggest you keep the firewall, mine shows the virus tries to get back on my machine every 20 or 30 seconds...

You can do without the firewall and just do the windows update, but the virus might be back on your machine and reboot before you have the upgrade done....

Post if you have troubles or if this helped you... I spent 3 hours, was one of the first infected and got rid of it before Norton had it on their website.

Regards,

Andi

the actual patch itself for Blaster is only
about 600K.

If you dont have a software or hardware
firewall between you and the 'Net, you're
an infection waiting to happen.

Hi,

http://microsoft.com/downloads/deta...32-3DE40F69C074

here is the download for this patch only, GET IT IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT YET!
1.2MB, so if you go online you might catch the virus while downloading.
I loaded Zonealarm first, and the the shutdown window popped up again. Was a real running against the time, download of Zonealarm ended 5 seconds before it shut down.
Pulled the ethernet plug while rebooting, installed zonealarm, plugged in again and did the windowsupdate, while it was loading the update zonealarm asked if msblast.exe should have permission to connect to the internet -> say no and kill it again.

The microsoft update is three weeks old, I really should do regulary windows updates...

By the way,

a friend had norton antivirus.

It deleted the worm from the disk, but not in the memory - the worm was back on the disk in a few seconds.

It didn't delete the registry entries either.

Windows 2000 will not reboot but say svchost.exe or similar has crashed - this is the same virus, same fix...

Now if I install XP for somebody the first addition will be a firewall software... and I'll use my P2-450mhz as a firewall for our home net.

I can't resist getting a jab in here

Every time there is news of new Windoze virus, I hear the "Ha Ha" laugh of Nelson, the bully from The Simpsons. I get to hear that laugh a lot...

We Mac users just shake our collective heads ruefully wondering if the other 95% of the computer-using world will ever get tired enough of all the viruses, bugs, security holes, hardware imcompatibilities and device conflicts to actually do something about it.

Why can't I get the image of lemmings out of my head?

Hi,

Mac?

oh wait:
-no reflex, G2 or other sims
-no serial ports which I need for some hardware unless you buy a USB adapter
-hardware itself is twice as expensive and the G4's were loud as hell...
-strange marketing (2x 2GHz is not 4GHz)
-and you still need Microsoft Office ouch

But I must say that I OS X seems nice, just to much funkey buttons but ok. I had FreeBSD on my computer for a long time, but finally decided that dualboot sucks... for those who don't know X is based on FreeBSD.
Their G4 notebook are cool as well, just too expensive, the keyboard leaves marks on the screen and 1 year warranty for such an expensive machine is out of question. IBM replaced screen and keyboard on a 3years less 2 weeks old Thinkpad...
And now Intel has the Pentium M with low energy consumption, another argument not to buy a Mac...

well, ignoring that piece of flamebait,

I'm currently writing this on a G4 laptop.
On my left is an IBM T30 laptop and to
my right is a Sun w/ 24" LCD.

While it's undoubtedly true that there
are no sims for the Mac, there is NO
question which machine I prefer to
spend my day in front of. I'm much much
more productive on the G4 w/ OSX and
it is a pleasure to use the operating
system for business (yes, Office), code
development (PERL, Python, C/C++,
Ruby, TCL) or fun w/o much of any
BSOD's, driver of the week crash/incompatibility
or the like.

Hi,

hey I was just jealous because I can't afford Helis and Macs at the same time but one day I'll probably switch too

I know Solaris, but our workstations at the eth have about 400MHz and surfing on them sucks, the pages build up really slow...

I'll give you that one, but it's not worth it to me to toil on a Windoze system just to have access to a sim.

Um, it's 2003. Serial ports are dead. USB and Firewire have become the new standard. (Both developed by Apple - USB was co-developed with Intel. Go figure)

A common misconception. But simply not true. Do some comparison shopping, feature for feature. Besides, you get what you pay for. Early G4's had noisy fans, but my dual 1.33Ghz G4 is whisper quite. There is a software update that fixes the noisy fan on early G4's.

Strange how? What's strange about focusing your marketing on your product's strengths? Dual 2Ghz systems aren't marketed as 4Ghz. Have you ever looked at the benchmarks for G4 vs. P4? When you factor in variable like OS efficiency, a 1.5Ghz G4 is faster than a 3GHz P4. If you really want to feel ill, look at the benchmarks for the new G5:

Thank Heaven that isn't true! Appleworks (bundled with most professional systems, $79 stand-alone) reads and writes Word and Excel files. FileMaker Pro blows Access out of the water (and is cross-platform). Keynote rips Powerpoint a new one Besides, Office IS available for the Mac. So if you MUST use it, you can (I have it...just in case...)

I'd love to see stats on that one. Don't forget that the chip itself may have low consumption. But when it has to process unnessessarily complex instruction sets, it uses more juice. It may be energy effecient...until it has to start chewing on Windoze code.

z11355: I've always enjoyed reading your posts. Now I know why!
