Look at it this way

A fire extinguisher is like a condom. It might take you days, months or years before you use it but when it’s needed it will save you many years of anguish.

It’s a good investment for the day that bad judgment might catch up to you.

helidog is right, I've worked in chemical industries before and a fire extinguisher is one item that you should carry, despite your fuel type... !whistles innocently! picking one up tomorrow

Halon extenguishers are bad because they work by removing Oxygen from the fire. At the same time the also take the Oxygen from the room. Obviously, if used outside is not that bad but if you have to fire that thing inside a trailer or something enclosed you could be hurt. I used to be a Missile Launch Officer in the Air Force and those idiots used to have them in the capsule. They finally removed them.

I keep a small marine fire extinguisher in my truck. Its good for oil and gas fires....Its one of those small to medium white ones you see at West Marine, Walmart, etc. It's a Kidde, 5BC. Same as the ones you see on most boats. Cost about $15.

Anyway, that little extinguisher put out a massive gasoline/engine fire last year...on a full size van. The guy had been trying to start it by pouring gas into the carb, lucky I drove by right when it lit off....the little extinguisher was only half used up. Very effective. Just the right size to put in your field box.

BUT...never light off a dry chemical extinguisher in an enclosed area without an escape route. That stuff makes one hell of a cloud and you cannot breathe or see. Seriously.

Glow Fuel vs. Gasoline

I am a fire fighter for the Army and I can tell you that Glow fuel (alcohol and nitromethane) is much more volatile than gasoline, which means that EVERYBODY should have a fire extinguisher in their box.

Now a CO2 fire extinguisher will indeed cool things down, but you it is a gas that will move away from the place that you need it and you will still have the fuel that spilled and could re-ignite. A chemical powder (ABC) fire extringuisher will do the trick on covering the fuel and separating it from the ignition source. An ABC extinguisher will not leave any stains.

Now lets take a look at the amount of fuel that we have in our machines and make a risk assesment if we need a fire extinguisher or not. It is a nice thing to have, but if the crash was hard enough to ignite the fuel, then the machine should go in the trash anyway, there is nothing salvageable there....

If you are smoking or have open flames near or around your fuel containers, then you definitely need an extinguisher.

You decide...

Keep your feet on the ground, but your eyes on the sky.

ABC extinguishers will do the trick, they are cheap, available from any hardware store, sporting goods shops. but they will destroy your radio equipment. the chemicals will attach electronic components. spend the money and get either a halon substitute or a CO2 model. your heli electronics are worth a lot more then the money you will save buying a ABC type.

I carry a 10 lb halon unit when i fly my jetheli.

Hi, had to chime in on this one. (I've been a Longtime Lurker)
A fire extinguisher is always a good thing to have around, no matter what you fly. Yes, even electrics catch fire occasionally; the likelihood of something going up fast is increasing with the higher power densities we are seeing in electrics.
So, what red bottle to get?
Halon is a big no as far as I am concerned. We are talking about holes in the ozone layer here, and I reckon we all ought to be taking our planet more seriously; it's not been banned for nothing.
Co2 is useful, but basically works the same as Halon, i.e.: killing the fire by displacing the Oxygen. (Remember the fire triangle? Heat/Fuel/Oxygen, removing any one of these kills the fire)
Using Halon or Co2 outside on a liquid fire will not always be effective. These types of extinguishers are intended to saturate a confined space with an inert gas.
As mentioned before on this thread, like any gas, Co2 gets cold when is decompresses. Shoot your hot OS90 with a gas extinguisher and things cool down pretty quick. You may not want to crack your block.
Baking soda is a good for putting out fires and is similar to what is used in many powder extinguishers, but the stuff gets in everywhere, and when it settles it soaks up the moisture from the air, becomes acidic and corrodes anything it comes into contact with. You may not want to kill your electronics.
What then is left?
The most modern foam extinguishers use foam which is both Ph neutral and non-conductive. Good for your gas heli, good for your electric heli, good for your buddy’s heli, and good to have in the car.
Foam is by far the most efficient, the fire is smothered almost instantly, both by the cooling effect and that oxygen can no longer reach the fuel.
A good 2 kilo foam bottle should be sufficient.
All extinguishers should be checked every 2 years, if not used. If you have an old extinguisher you will probably find it cheaper to buy a new one rather than fill an old one. Just empty it in a field somewhere and have a practice.

Sorry to go on, and about the ozone layer thing.
Please don't flame me. Absolutely no pun intended.

Just to clarify an earlier statement.

The AMA 2004 model safety code does not require anyone to have a fire extinguisher.

i did some research on this recently. the BC type extinguishers are best for helis. i found this out after i used an ABC type on my heli, and got a lot of baked on residue that was a bitch to get off. apparently the "A" part of ABC will bond to hot metal. the BC types don't have this problem. that's why you see them labeled kitchen/garage, or automotive. it's so your appliances or electronics are easier to clean up.

Some heads up on turbine fire potential. Last week a turbine plane went down at the Sepulvida Basin CA flying field and started a huge brushfire. This is going to have a big repurcussion for RC in general but in particular turbine powered models in CA. Our club is already going to ban gas helis as our site is extremely dry and ripe for fires.

GWS nitro planes and helis are a risk of causing a fire as well, if you crash either and have a short circuit from your battery this can and will ignite your glow fuel. as far as the AMA and extingushers you will find that they are required for all turbine powered aircraft and events as well as gas powered events. and it is common sence that if you are using or carring a flamable liquid that you should have one available and your local fire department may require you to have one at hand as well.

You should get Cold Fire. It is what I use. I keep one everywhere. You can get them in a traditional extinguisher style container, an aerasol can, or a refillable trigger spray bottle. This stuff works awesome. I use it to put out fires. And also to cool things down around the shop after I do anything to metal to get it hot. I saw a demonstration with this stuff once. The guy took a paper towel. Sprayed it with cold fire, and then took a butane torch. Put the torch on the paper towel for about 3 minutes. The towel never caught fire. As soon as he put the flame out he just wadded it up in his hands.
The website is here.

Hmm can you use a fire extinguisher on an electric fire? I figure that's the battery having a chemical reaction no real way to fight it.

I am a firefighter and the non-conductive foams work. like someone said earlier take out one leg of the fire triangle and it will go out. The problem with halon and co2 is that they will not stay around the fire for long enough in any wind whatever for them to put the fire out. Either use bc foam or bc dry chem and deal with the cleanup.
