Don't need one.. unless you or someone around smoking while you are filling up.. Its a fallacy about gas helicopter catch fire when crashed. That's just not true.

Rick,
I believe that an ABC type will do the trick. I would think you could use a small one. I don't know what sort of size rating system there is. Check the department stores.

BTW, I think the AMA here in the U.S. requires if you fly gas you have an extinguisher. It's not a bad idea. In fact, I need to do some shopping myself.

Life's a journey, NOT a destination.

Definitely a good idea to have one! I've had my car completely burned down, while I was standing there helpless because I didn't have a $20 extinguisher on me. By the time fire department got there it was all over. Don't you guys remember Augusto's heli, this thing has been scorching for good few minutes before someone came up with the extinguisher, the water only made things worse.

...and Augusto's heli wasn't a gasser.

Yes, it's true...AMA rules (i.e. insurance restrictions ON the AMA) require members with gas-powered engines to have an extinguisher.

Extinguisher

Thanks for all the feedback Isn't there an extinguisher that won't harm the electrical stuff, or the engine, if I need to use it? Something that's not corrosive?

Halon. But they stopped making them in 2002(Ozone) and looks like they are supposed to not be in service after 12/03.

too bad about the Halon, I have a small Halon on my flight box. It was not cheap at a little over $70.00 but I figured I got lots more than that tied up in my equipment.
Like Seneca said you don't need one until ya need one then you need one real bad!!

Hallon replacement

Someone showed me a page on the web that shows a replacement for the hallow (sp?) extinguisher. Anyone know where to get it? I'm in PA, and does anyone know the size I need? Thanks much, Rick

If you are carring a fire extinguisher, Just remember to service them, usually they have to be recharged about once a year.

Including the one in your car, they tend to loose presure over time.

There are CO2 ones but I think they are not approved for liquids.

Yeah, we make a national sport of suing each other down here; if you don't CYA you're going to take it eventually.

I keep a fire extinguisher in all my cars, like Seneca said, you never know, it might not necessarily be anything to have to do with you. A couple years ago I used one to put out a small brush fire on the side of the road, some moron must have just thrown a cigarette out (gets up to 115+ here in the summer, the common sense of some people just amazes me ), was only about 5 x 5; hosed it down and went on my way. Probably would have burned at least a couple acres if no-one caught it.

Baking soda would work fine for a small fire, like a heli.

true but you have to remember.. expanding gas is COLD... and you will freeze your stuff.. if the fire dont get it.. a steady blast with a co2 extinguisher will.... btw.. they make AWESOME instant beer coolers!!!

A ABC extinguisher will do the job. But if your really serious a Co2 extinguisher will do a much better job because it will not only put the fire out, it will also chill things quite a lot and which will go a long way in preventing the fire from flaring back up after it has been put out due to something hot re-igniting the fire.

I lost my infamous tag line.

Fire extinguisher for gasser

Hi all,

I agree on the need for a standby fire extinguisher when flying gasser. Since the most probable cause of fire for gasser is gasoline, the right type of fire extinguisher should be Type B fire extinguisher. A fire extinguisher that discharges carbon dioxide is ideal because it won't leave much stains on the gasser like fire extinguisher that discharges foam (Both are Type B fire extinguishers).

Hope my post helps.
