Vario Benzin - left hand rotation thoughts

Hi

After much deliberation, I think I'm going for a Vario Benzin 8300C or CS as a camera ship (Plus a sport model and if I get bored with pics slam it in a fuse )

From what I've heard it is one of, if not the smoothest gassers out there, low parts count, and the looks definitely grow on you. I like the design, and flexibilty of the heli.

My only concerns are firstly having not flown a left had rotation heli before, do they take a while to get used to them ??

On with other bits, I'd like the electric start, pretty cool, and also less strain on everything I feel especially with camera rig beneath it.

Is the stock muffler quiet enough??

Is the surpressor cap a must?

Is the recommended engine the G23 or G25 (Not up on gassers take it the G230 is the old G23 ??)

Look forward to any comments.

It does not take long to get used to left-hand rotation.

When you lift off with a RH rotation helicopter you normally put in a bit of RH cyclic. This tilt is needed to compensate for tail rotor thrust.

With LH rotation, you need to tilt to the left. It took me a minute or two to get used to the tilt being the other way. Until I figured out what was going on, I tended to let the heli drift off to the right.

The tilt is not much, and you get so used to the RH tilt that you don't really notice it. The LH tilt will look a bit strange until you get used to it.

Since you are using as a camera ship, aerobatics probably won't be much of a concern. The are some fore-aft to left-right cyclic interactions that can occur that depend on direction of rotation. These may or may not be a problem. For instance, you may have use right-roll correction in loops instead of left.

Summary: LH rotation is not something to be concerned about.

I agree totally - the left hand rotation is really a non-issue. I think it's just that you get so used to seeing the right skid hang low, your brain starts to think this is normal (or level). When you first see that left skid hang down, it looks exagerated. Takes a couple of minutes and then you'll never think of it again. You'll just fly the heli.

Good luck.

Just read your site, didn't realise the sensor was so simple, when it gets here, you'll be geting a call.Just one query, and not being up to speed on gassers yet, is it a problem loosing the stock kill switch (Vario)???

I'm assuming this is a safety device. can the engine still be shut down as normal i.e Low trim.

Thanks for all the comments, I can see how it will feel weird at first, but I'm sure that will be fine.

Only trouble is no one has them in stock

Thanks Naomi,

As the exhaust is mounted at the front this may cause problems with camera work. It could be moved, but I think its there for CofG reasons. Thanks for your help, just hoping vario get some in soon.

Hi

I did yesterday, I also rang Adam NORTH, Vario USA. The difference in service is like chalk and cheese. Had a few things to say and not much information from Vario UK. I was asking justified questions about spec etc, the only thing mentioned was about the wooden servo tray on the Trainer model and how it absorded vibration. Not very helpful in respect of specification as I'm not too familiar with gassers and to be honest it seemd they werent too bothered about a sale, plus the prices are unreal, they also stated about the American/canadian market having there own designs.

I spoke to Adam straight after and couldnt have dealt with a nicer more informative guy, offered to drop ship direct from Germany to save time, and send me the remaining parts required direct from the USA. Had a good chat about the machines etc, very helpful, and deserved a sale.

Now the crux of the matter is this, and I guess I'll get flames on this one.

I prefer the Canadian/US design of the CCPM and on top of that like the looks of the 'pink' frames etc. I like the work that has been done, the stock K&N filter (Well you have to pay for it) and the canopy style.

The most vital thing to me, I can get one shipped, incl engine, K&N, Silencer from the US, pay all import duty and pay a total of £1077.GBP

Now in the UK, the trainer itself is £927, plus engine £360, silencer £160 do the maths, making a good saving, plus I would get the stock, wood servo frame trainer for that.

Any thoughts, am I doing wrong by importing ?????

Lee,
Glad you making some good steps... basically.. not much changed to the air star CCPM Frame. Just 3 pieces of side frame, the skyfox front radio tray, 540CC Fuel Tank, and Viper Style Canopy. The rest of the mechanic are the same as the original benzin. Very Easy to changed it over provided you haven't built your benzin yet. nothing wrong of buying from Canada or USA if they have the stuff in stock.

Lee.
Your telephone call yesterday was reference initally to the Benzin CS i informed you that that was a model made specifically by Vario USA for the American market ( not a Vario Germany product ) I did not moan about the product just tried to explain that i cannot give any sales or support on this particulat model. You were looking for a model that you could use as a sport / camera ship so i recomended the streched version of the Benzin and also explained that the Benzin Acrobatic would not be sutable due to the forward fixing of the exhaust system. Therefore all we could offer to suit your requirements was the Benzin 8301 model. Contrary to your opinion that we are not interested in selling this modeli can assure you we are and do so with full spares / technical support back up.
The streched Benzin complete with Vario modified Zenoah G230 motor, silencer system ( camera version with down the boom silencer) and glass 1780mm blades retails for ( UK ) £1355.00. This price is not set by ourselves it is a world wide price.
I do not have a problem with you paying the lower price for the CS version but do not get upset if you need parts or technical information as this is not avalable from ourselves, or any country other than the US.
On the 8301 Benzin any information / help is only a phone call away and parts are held in stock.
The choice is yours

Hi John

I will bear in mind what you have said about the warranty, in my experience, and luckily I have never had too many problems with warranty issues, those that I have had in the UK have been a fight to say the least to get the warranty honoured, I am not saying you are like this in any way, thats my experience with other dealers/distributors. I wouldnt get upset as it would have been my decision to purchasde elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong I would love to buy from you, the thought of the wooden servo tray does put me off slightly though, hence my liking of the vario usa main frames and also the air star converson.

In any hobby, a little under £300 is a lot to save and could go towards other items, I was going to say fuel then but thats a non starter with a Benzin

I apologise if my email sounded harsh, but as a modeller in the UK get quite frustrated at times with the prices overseas, I won't go on as we've been here many times before.

I allocated £1200 to the purchase of a new benzin, as you can see I will struggle in the UK to accomplish this (Unless you are having any sales or special offers)

Out of interest, and I know how much you have quoted for the stretch benzin, what would the standard benzin have been?????

Regards

Lee

Hi Lee,

I have had very good service from Daniel at www.variocanada.com .
We bought the stretched Benzin with the vertical Air Star frames and the larger Benzin canopy for better visibility in the air. The parts that are unique to this Benzin are the frames only.

Good luck,

Mark G.

Hi Lee
Sorry it was not a warrenty problem that i meant, it was if you asked me for parts for the CS version and i could not supply ie.. frames ect, With regard to the standard version i must be honest and tell you that this model has been discontinued from the Vario product range due to the introduction of the Benzin Acrobatic. Both these models are aimed at different sectors of the market. The streched Benzin is aimed at the sport flyer who fancys a large petrol helicopter for weekend flying with the option of fitting into a scale fuselage at a later date. The Acrobatic is aimed at the pilot who enjoys flying aerobatic / 3D manouvers, this version is not sutable for fitting into a scale fuselage. We have one standard 8300 version kit left in stock which will be within your price range, The only difference between this and the streched version is the boom length , gearing, and smaller blades all these parts will remain avalable so there will not be a problem in the future on parts. Also i have a mint s/hand 8301 now and a 8300 coming soon
Regards
John.

Vario have discontinued the 8300 kit (short boom version of the Benzine trainer) as stated in Johns post above. The long boom version 8301 will still be available as this fits most of their fuselages. The 8301 uses the gear ratio required for most of these fuselages.

I fly a new Benzine Acrobatic and it is very aerobatic/3D, this is not required for a scale fuselage!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the frame of the Acrobat is quite unique, there is not front rc radio tray , everything just built right on the frame itself. electronics just mounted on a carbon plate behind main shaft. Battery at the top front between frame brace. Swings a big mean set of blades. wonder how much the frame with all the traverse link cost a set.

Hi Heli_Gal, I've now converted my Acrtobatic to 26cc It is absolutly awesome You need to get one

A 3D friend of mine 3Ded it at the weekend, he was amazed at its performance and it was the first time he had flown a gassser (and that was when it was still 23cc )
