Gasser Model RC Helicopters > HIROBO Eagle Gasser

Hi everyone,

I live in Indonesia, but do my Electronics and Hobby shopping in Singapore.

One of the lHS's is an Hirobo.Dealer and has a Eagle gasser.
It is the Long Tail version and rather expensive, but all metal.
What I've heard sofar, is; excellent mechanics but an underpowered engine (Tanaka).

Any thoughts about this machine.

The Bergen sounds very good to me, but I would have to get it shipped to Indonesia and parts are going to be a pain in the neck. to get them here.

It´s a fine Heli but if Hirobo still supplies it with the Tanaka you will not have anything to do with it except spending time and money. Things goes worst in your heat weather.
Have a friend living in Thailand who has also this heli and as me, he did the engine conversion to the G230RC but he also talked me about a Zcell gasser . Have you tried to find different option at cyberheli? They sure have what you´re looking for.

Thanks Elossam,

This one is still sold with the Tanaka engine and I have heard from others also that it is to weak..

II know Cyberheli, but they are in Hongkong and I am trying to avoid mail-order.

There is another shop in Singapore who is a JR dealer and have a JR Voyager Gas, but it has a lot of plastic parts.

BTW, I am only just getting back into Heli's and don;t know to much about them. I am from the Ewald Heim era! and Kavan Jet Rangers!

The reason I want a gas Heli is that there is no Glow fuel out here and it saves on the electrical bagage.

aaaaaaaaaa,,, open up those ports on that Tanaka, slap on a bigger carb, match the manifold, and fly her...

Jim,

Do you know the standard HP rating for the engine and what would be
the HP gain with a bigger carb. (Walbro 603?) and a certain amount of porting.

Mechanically I would be able to do the mods myselve.

I am not thinking of any 3D flying.

Elossam suggested the JR Voyager, but I do like the Eagle which I can buy locally here. It would be an long boom version weight 6.3 Kg

Andre,,, in the late 80s I use-to port my own gasoline weed eaters and small chain saw motors for my RC boats, the first motor I did was a Home Lite 25cc and I did the port modifications with files, and I bought a larger carb from Warehouse Hobbies, it worked out very well, the motor ran quite strong,,, then I bought an Sherline milling machine,,, I ported a lot of motors on that little mill,,,

I would think that the Tanaka would be some where around 1 & 1/3 HP (but I don't know for sure !!) and I would think the Tanaka is a well made motor, it just needs some work,,,

raising compression and modifying port timing,,,
when modifying the Zenoha 23 (and other motors) for RC boats I used to remove 20 or 35 thousands on the bottom of the cylinders to increase the compression, but when this is done you lower the exhaust port (lowering your exhaust port lowers your top RPM, not good), so by removing 20 thousands on the bottom of the cylinder you must remove 20 thousands from the top of the exhaust port to get the port timing back to the stock timing, so at this point your exhaust port timing is still stock but you have increased your compression (so when cutting your exhaust port you may want to raise it another 10 or 15 thousands to raise your top RPM some),,, and remember, if you increase your compression buy removing 20 thousands on the bottom of the cylinder, that also lowers your intake port, so you may want to raise the top of your intake port 20 thousands,,,

intake ports,,,
ALL the gasoline motors I modified "had quite small intake ports",,, I would widened the intake ports by removing 20 or more thousands off each side, and after raising the compression I would remove the same amount off the top of the intake port as I removed off the bottom of the cylinder, this will raise the top of the intake port to match the bottom of the piston skirt when the piston is at top dead center,,, and on some motors (like the Zenoha 23) the top of intake could be raised even more than what was taken off the bottom of the cylinder, because in 100% stock form when the piston is at top dead center the bottom of it's skirt is much higher than the top of the intake port,,, (and rememmber that 20 thousands is half a millimeter, so removing 20 thousands off each side of your intake port = 1 millimeter)

as you said you don't need a racing motor, you just want more power for more fun,,, so,,,

my suggestions,,,
compression, remove 25 thousands off the bottom of your cylinder,
exhaust port, raise 25 to 35 thousands off the top,
intake port, raise 20 thousands off the top and widen it by removing 20 or 25 thousands off each side,,,

as for the carburetor, just run the same carb that is used on that hot Zenoha heli motors...

Oh, you may need to match you manifold to the intake port after the modifications...

Jim,

That's an extremely educational and helpfull reply.
I know a little bit about porting. This will help a lot with this specific engine.

Thanks very much.
