How much is too much heat for the astro 010 ?
I've got a 10 turn in my hummer with a phoenix 10 controller. I'm running a 12 tooth pinion with Hornet carbon fiber blades. I get around 17-18 minutes hover time with 1200 e-tech batteries. I'm also running a gws direct drive tail motor swinging a 3x2 prop. Anyway, after such a flight, I can hold my finger on the astro for about 3 or 4 seconds tops. It's pretty warm. I've heard excessive heat can eventually sap the magnets.
If I go down to an 11 tooth pinion lift is only fair and heat seems the same. I've checked everywhere for binding, everything seems pretty smooth, no tight gear mesh..etc.
I advanced the timing from standard to the most advanced on the phoenix 10. I have yet to try this and see what the temps are, maybe tomorrow.
Anyway, just guessing I'd say the motor is between 135-140 degreesF after 18 minutes. Will this slowly kill my 010 ? TIA.

I assume you are running 2 cell e-techs? 3 would be awy too much for that motor/pinion combo on that heli.

Brushless motors will feel hotter as their windings are against the case which makes for a good heatsink. 17-18 minutes does not indicate an excessive load though on 1200 E-Techs and the direct drive tail motor. I run about 24-27 but that is with the stock tail setup which will draw less current and make for longer flights.

If you can measure the temp and it is less than 200 degrees I would say you are fine. The magnets should be good for much higher than that without demagnatizing.

Good luck with it and let us knwo how it goes!

Yes, I'm running 2s 1200 E-techs.
It sounds as though I have nothing to worry about then. I changed the timing because I've found in the past that depending on how an electric motor is loaded it will actually run more efficiently with advanced timing...or more retarded timing as the case would dictate.
Thanks for the reply Steve !
I'm just getting into forward flight and it's a blast ! Crashing less and less.
Would you happen to know if the carbon fiber boom is round abouts a 1/4 inch in diameter ? I've got a good lead on dirt cheap carbon fiber rods and tubes. My stock boom has a "green stick" fracture, which has been repaired but I'd eventually like to replace it.

Geeze you would ask the diameter - I had bought a ton of CF tube at the Toledo show a couple of years ago without any real use and they fit perfect, but I can't recall the size. I also run aluminum tube on the tail - I think 5/16" (from memory here) - it is a bit loose but a single wrap of tape and it press fits in place - I didn't bother gluing and it hold fine even in extreme use.

I hear ya on teh timing. The Astro is a 4 pole I think so it requires a certain timing advance to optimize things. On my razor (a 2 pole) I have increased the timing and I get more power but the motor heats and flight times are less. I recall the 4 pole motors being the middle timing advance. Give them all a shot and see how they work.

Unlike Neodymium Iron Boron the Samarium Cobalt in your Astro is far more heat resistant. What would concern me is that if things are getting to hot then there is an efficientcy loss somewhere. Remember in a perfect world you want the motor to run as close to its rated kv as possible i.e fast probably. And lower the gearing if required, it sounds like thats what you need to do
